Well if I'm in the American League I would take Ortiz no questions asked. Here is why I say that the fact that he doesn't play in the field is irrelvant in this discussion. Simply because every team needs a DH. So I want the best offensive player and the offensive player overall is Ortiz. More HR'S, RBIS, AND RUNS SCORED. There is not a debate to be had here. Now if I was in the NL, Ortiz at first base would scare me, I would take Jeter since defense matters in the nl. Remember every team need a DH in the AL, so whether we like it or not a DH is a part of the team, so that spot needs to be filled. I can't find any better DH's then Ortiz, I could find better shortstops though. Hence I want Ortiz.
Another way to look at this since both the DH and shortstop spot have to be filled eventually. Do I want to start my team around a #2 hitter or a #3/4 hitter to me it is no contest you want the #3/4 hitter first, not to say that the #2 hitter doesn't play an important role. I mean look at it this way are you a better ballclub offensively With a Great Dh (#3/4) and an okay shortstop (Decent defensively) #7 hitter, or are u better with Jeter #2 hitter, and an adequate DH #6 hitter. To me it is no contest, since both spot have to be filled defense it not an issue, we can always get a guy to play short defensively, the question purely comes down to is the better offense player, and that is Ortiz. Anyone, who say that Jeter is a better offense player then Ortiz has officially lost it. If you tell me Jeter is a better all around player, I will agree with you. The problem is do you want to start your team with a #3/4 hitter or a #2 hitter, remember although if you take Ortiz you may not have a guy as good Jeter offensively at short, but his defense should be equal to jeters. So your not giving up anything defensively, and you have the best offensive player in the lineup, because Ortiz is better then any adequate DH. Let me see I will take ortiz.
