Sad crass ‘entertainment’ should hold such an esteemed place in the narrative of a nation but here we are. The powers that be have always needed the voting public’s cooperation. Press the right buttons so easy. Every year since the first election it get’s worse. Whether “babies in incubators being unplugged” or “draining the swamp”. Forget the approx. breakdown but roughly 80% of voting public will vote based on/for these “emotions”, 19% inform themselves “adequately” and 1% like you and I know what’s really going on, lol ;). (Not forgetting the almost half the pop. that don’t vote-by design?).
Strip away the rhetoric, hyperbole and partisanship (it is relatively easy to check ie: mainstream media; the data for scientific statistical significance in the communication age) what remains is a contest fought untethered by fading traditions in a supra-dogmatic arena/with great scope for opponents to interpret what goes and what doesn’t. (May be a good thing, as they say democracy is messy/ “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” W.C.) A long way from motherhood and apple pie.
(perhaps, like Krugman said of depression economic strategy you posted it applies to modern society “in which virtue was vice and prudence was folly”, lol)
