JL /raf nicely summarized we could talk about this topic for years ,but main issues are that in COPD there is a structural as well inflammatory component. I can see how we can affect the inflammatory component with EPA in a short time and of course we have tried for many years and continue to do that with steroids acutely and chronically in the form of prednisone. Although these patients improve ,getting them off of oxygen is not always easy in COPD ,presumably because of the structural damage. Now asthma is a different topic since there is a larger inflammatory component but usually because there is no structural damage ,these patients usually do not need oxygen .ARDS is all together much more complicated and we have much less understanding of the precipitating and causative factors. Doing long term studies on these entities using EPA would be a monumental task and cost and although feasible , the way these kinds of studies are funded probably not worth it long term.
