Just so we know what we are talking about, the child did not have to be swimming for the alligator to attack him. Alligators can move pretty darned fast on land when in attack mode. All this child needed to do was to get within strike range, which could have been within ten feet of the water's edge. It is knee-jerk stuff to blame the parents, which may not necessarily have been the case at all. He was wading, though, which is supposedly not allowed (no swimming signs). Sometimes lessons learned are pretty horrific.
