Nowadays, $300K a year no longer makes anyone "wealthy". That's happened in a relatively short time. Even 15 years ago, that was the kind of salary only "rich" people could aspire to. But the average Ph.D working as a full professor makes $100K or less annually. Assistant and associate professors make much less. Naturally there are exceptions: famous people, people in some of the sciences, people who also have lucrative consulting gigs. But the average academic doesn't do all that well.
