btw, re: paper checks, EU folks can't believe we're still using paper checks in the USA.
they have had direct person-to-person ACH via online banking since the 90s.

with my ING account here, i can use the phone app to instantly send money to anyone in EU just using their bank account number.
instant electronic xfer at no extra cost.

we use it to split the check at restaurants.
so simple...

when i'm back in USA,
i feel like i'm in the stone age of banking...
