Not true... They are the only company making such a chip and it works too.

QUALCOMM’s radioOne™ quad-band GSM/GPRS with WCDMA (UMTS) chipset solution eliminates the need for intermediate frequency (IF) signal conversion by converting the radio frequency (RF) signal directly to baseband and the baseband signal directly to RF. This solution enables worldwide GSM and WCDMA (UMTS) roaming with a dual-mode, dual-band WCDMA (UMTS) transmitter and receiver, and quad-band GSM/GPRS transceiver.

The quad-band GSM/GPRS with UMTS chipset solution consists of:
RFL6200™ low noise amplifier (LNA): 4mm x 4mm 16-pin BCC++ package
RFR6200™ receiver: 6mm x 6mm 40-pin BCC++ package
RTR6250™ integrated GSM/GPRS transceiver and WCDMA (UMTS) transmitter: 8mm x 8mm 56-pin Quad Flat No-Lead (QFN) package

Benefits
Reduces BOM costs by decreasing parts count
Saves board space and enables smaller form factors
Frees board space for feature-rich capabilities without increasing handset size
Provides the entire transmit synthesizer on-chip (transmit phase locked loop [PLL] and voltage control oscillator [VCO]) and a power reduction feature that extends handset talk time

Key Functionality
Support for dual-band WCDMA (UMTS) operations at 1900 MHz and 2100 MHz
Support for quad-band GSM transceiver operations (GSM 850/900/1800/1900)
Direct interface with MSM6250™ baseband processor
Compatibility with the powerOne™ PM6650™ power management solution
SiGe BiCMOS process for high linearity and low power consumption
LNAs with direct conversion mixers and filtering (receivers)
Offset PLL for GSM transmitter and ZIF upconversion modulator for WCDMA (UMTS) (transmitters)

My stance is that I want to own a company that makes money from something besides royalties (i.e. an Actual product you can touch). I find it rather odd that QCOM is not presently making any base station chips for WCDMA, but I digress...

They make semiconductors and software besides licensing, I don't know what more they could offer... If you choose to not believe or understand the technology at hand that is your perogative, but please do a little more research before making such gross misjudgements 8^)
