As far as I can figure out, handloading is the recycling of certain component parts of ammunition.

When one shoots a gun, the bullet flies out the front, but there's still some pieces remaining in the gun. These pieces can be re-used. Apparently, these pieces also represent a major portion of the ammunition's cost. Their re-use translates into substantial savings.

Quality seems to be another consideration. Ammunition can be created using meticulous care. It's the difference between something created by a skilled craftsperson as opposed to something mass produced by an automated machine. People have written about whether their gun likes what they feed it, and creating their own ammunition enables them to alter the recipe.

On another topic, remotely related, but still concerning ammunition, is the matter of litter. When I lived in the country, I'd encounter discarded ammunition. It's easy to see, often made from brightly coloured plastic. It's also very long lasting. If these were recycled, it would mean that they would accompany the hunter home, and not be left on the ground. A benefit for everyone.
