Come on! It's simple. Equipment for new technologies are almost always more expensive to rollout than equipment for current technologies. This is how the nok's, qcom's, moto's, and ericy's stay in biz. They have to invent new systems and services otherwise they might as well be in the tv tube biz.

AWE's path is expensive because at this point there just isn't the economies of scale to make the switch to all these technologies cheap. Nok assured this with AWE's choice. Obviously, with just a few manufactures for the equipment there isn't competition. Competition is what brings the cost down for the carriers.
