Don't take trades on stocks you're unfamiliar with -- I've thought that for years. Occassionally I would still break that rule. Now it's one of my KEYS to being right more often than I'm wrong. If you trade tickers you're familiar with you already have an advantage over 90% of the people who are/will be trading it.
When I first started out I would look at the % gainers and losers for the day and go to town. Inevitably it was a losing strategy. To get the advantage, do scans a few times a week, then look for whats moving in the day. No reason to try to anticipate before you see the move. Play the move, and only the ones that are moving.
I only know this due to white entitlement, clearly.
