Snaper had an excellent idea, using metal foam as a battery plate. Mathematically, he also figured the optimum configuration - dodecahedral.
However, neither proved achievable with present day technology.
Fortunately, Elod came up with a workable solution. Not totally unique mind you but he was able to put together different known technologies into what we have today, a RVC substrate plated with a lead/tin alloy, framed and tabbed.
As for FF's, it appears to me that they have been trying to do a work around on our design. That can be seen from their many design changes over the years. They cite using a pasted graphite substrate. Graphite being a better conductor than plain vitreous carbon but with its own inherent problems such as being soft and brittle. IMO they also lack some necessary items that PT has of which I won't go into here. I believe that's why they cite their battery as being another 1 1/2 years out.
