Be sure and see the recent (few weeks old) story about IBM on 60 Minutes... they're placing their whole future on a new chip design that can take up to 5 years to complete R & D.

Let's see what I can find... interesting can't find... hmmm maybe 60 Minutes rerun on CNBC or a CNBC special then... or the June 100 year old showing.... wow, anyway said the were putting billions into it.

But that's not the story I saw... ARG! Maybe this is it http://www.research.ibm.com/articles/chipchallenge.shtml#fbid=ECtZmMYtCZN but without "60 Minutes" reporting on it

Tackling tomorrow’s chip grand challenge today
R&D investment to push limits of silicon to meet demands of cloud computing and big data systems

Seven nanometers. That’s slightly longer than the 2.5 nm circumference of a DNA double helix. And 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. It’s also the miniscule dimension that future semiconductors must push past to keep up with today’s computing demands being put on cloud, big data and cognitive systems.

IBM’s five-year $3 billion investment in research and early-stage development aims to take semiconductors beyond seven nanometers – and beyond silicon, today’s ubiquitous chip material that’s fast becoming the bottleneck to next generation computers required for a new era of computing....
