'no quarrel with having a second language or allowing one to be taught.'

Ah, sorry, i've misunderstood - i thought you were one of those proposing that the state dictate one single language as 'official' to the exclusion of another

You do, though, seem to want to suppress spanish to some degree at least, with this 'second' language approach .... would you mind explaining the reasoning here? .... does this mean the hispano is second-class in other respects? ... and if so, will he get a discount on his tax bill commensurate with his inferior status? ... will he be only half-subject to speed limits, for instance if the limit is 55 can he drive 110, or does it work the other way, he can go only 27.5?

'point is that the U.S. can not afford to cater'

Hmmm, maybe even more could be saved just shutting down the schools entirely, turn the kids out into the street .... they'll learn stuff, never fear, kids are like that ..... or maybe if that's considered a little tooo much freedom, they could all just be drafted into the army .... hey, that's a great idea, think how many places you could invade with that amount of warm guns eh ....... no wait, you'd have to teach them enough of the various tongues that they could bark orders at the locals ... ah, wouldn't work, got to think up something else
