"who gets to define 'illegal', those with more guns, more money, more political clout, what?
Sovereign nations make the rules, and when you cross northward across the Rio Grande, my friend, you are in the United States - a sovereign nation with an absolute right to define what is "illegal" and what is not.
"...to tell the brown man who has trod these lands for lo these tens of thousands of years..."
"This is our 'old country', right here on this rock, remember we never crossed the border, the border crossed us .... you want to bring up the subject of 'aliens', well it sounds like you're more alien than the brown folk, by far..."
Give me a break with the "brown man" garbage. Are you a native mexican indian, or a mestizo, a mixture of the natives and the Spanish conquerors of the 16th century?? Your arrogance tells me that you have at least some Spanish genes, if not a lot. Was the Spanish language you love to glorify so much the original language of the indigenous mexican inhabitants?? I think not, so I suggest you get off your hypocritical high horse.
"are too bloody lazy and/or mentally deficient to attempt to understand a tongue they paint as 'alien' though it has clearly been here far longer than they"
English has been spoken in North America as for as long as Spanish, unless the Aztecs, Yaqi's etc. somehow spoke Spanish before the Spaniards conquered and almost killed them all off. You need to study your history a bit more, and this time not the comic book version.
"Of the Lousiana purchase i know little, beyond the fact that its 200th anniversary is coming [there is an article on nytimes.com], but i believe it is quite unlike the taking of the northern half of México, which was completely illegitimate in all respects, purely a matter of conquest by slavers and haters of catholics ."
It sounds to me like the Louisiana Purchase is not the only thing you know "little" about. It was the Spanish that bought in Catholicism, not the indigenous peoples despite your pompous claims of "tens of thousands of years of the brown man". As for the ownership of Texas, New Mexico, California, etc. being "illegitimate", an American (US version) philosopher once said "sh*t happens" -- get over it because it it is not going to change.
