while i sat on a tractor up and down up and down

i spent years of summers doing that. pulling a 12 foot digger behind a John Deere 730 on 80 acre summer fallow fields. What it did for me was to give me time to think. about everything. i still am not intimidated by being alone, i sort of consider it opportunity.

I had the absolute total mental free time to learn to turn any problem inside out and sideways, until i could separate the logical solution from the emotional one, but then realizing that both were relevant which made the solution no clearer sometimes. And being an adolescent, some choices were complex. a city kid asking the girl you were interested in to the movies could result in any sort of outcome--- logic was sometimes not the side that won.

Hell, by the time i got out of high school, i already knew what i wanted to do by process of elimination. And it wasn't driving tractor anymore.

But it became a part of us, eh? Last time back home i rode in the tractor with a great-nephew, a teen. Nowadays, it is riding in an air conditioned cab with mp3 blaring and with total gps control. The gps drives, so as to avoid any overlap (fuel savings), but now, the driver has nothing to do nearly all the time.. at the end of the round, a tone sounds to let you know that you are going to turn around. this means that it takes almost no effort to do this job... so little that you feel like an annoyance to the navigation system. but instead of doing nothing at all, since they don't have to pay attention, they can just read a book. the kid reads a pile of books per week in summer, gets to think about countless points of view. my guess is that he, too, will leave the farm, knowing that looking over the next hill is an imperative. and then perhaps remember it fondly and sort of regret leaving later in life. something like that. Big lightning show going on across the valley, gotta go see if i can spot a smoke or two.
