Not to sound like a doom-and-gloomer, but remember deflation appeared relatively late in the Great Depression, after inflation did the damage, and I believe after private ownership of gold was outlawed.

I always wondered where the money physically went until I saw a photo of a man shoveling dollars into a flaming furnace -- the image is still livid in my mind (shiver). . .
