There are two factors involved in an "evolving" cancer. First, it is correct that secondary tumors carry some but not necessarily all of the antigens present in the original tumor since a new tumor originates from a subset of cancer cells. This is best viewed as founder effect (type of genetic drift; term from evolutionary biology). However, new mutations can arise in a secondary tumor that is not present in the original tumor. Thus, there is a strong rationale to inject the primary tumor, for sure, and secondary tumors that arise from it.
