OT: Sony Turns Up the Volume On Handheld Entertainment
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/010501/0220.html
Next Generation CLIE(TM)Handheld is the First Palm OS®-Based Product to Offer an Integrated MP3 Player and High Resolution Color Screen
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2001-- Sony Electronics today unveiled its second generation CLIE (pronounced klee-AY) handheld, marking the first time a Palm-Powered(TM) handheld will offer an embedded digital audio player and a high-resolution (320 x 320 pixels) color screen.
Drawing from Sony's expertise in the personal audio, digital display and handheld categories, the newly designed CLIE PEG-N710C handheld delivers a rich multimedia experience while retaining all of the easy-to-use functionality of the Palm® operating system.
The new handheld will be available at retailers nationwide in June for less than $500. The product can be pre-ordered beginning today at www.sonystyle.com/clie.
``Never before has something designed for the hand so excited the eyes and ears,'' said Russell Paik, vice president of handheld marketing at Sony Electronics. ``The high-resolution color screen delivers amazing clarity and crispness to your images and fonts, while the embedded digital audio player belts out your favorite tunes without the need for an add-on audio module. And because it operates on the industry standard Palm OS, the new CLIE handheld allows you to check your calendar or address book quickly and easily.''
Integrated Audio Player Built on Sony Expertise
To enable users access to their personal library of legacy and downloaded copyright-protected content, the CLIE PEG-N710C handheld plays both native MP3 and encoded-ATRAC3 audio files. The unit reads digital audio files directly from the supplied 8MB Memory Stick® removable media, freeing up the internal 8MB (7MB available) of memory for standard personal digital assistant (PDA) applications, such as address book, memo and calendar. With the recently announced 128MB Memory Stick media, users can download or transfer up to four hours of digital audio content on a single stick. Available Magic Gate(TM) Memory Stick media records and stores secure ATRAC3 and native MP3 digital music files.
``When designing the next generation CLIE handheld, we sat down and listened to what our customers wanted in a personal entertainment organizer,'' Paik said. ``In doing so, we implemented all that we had learned in the personal audio category thus far, and brought a feature to a Palm-based device that was previously thought impossible.''
Taking further design cues from Sony's personal audio devices, the CLIE PEG-N710C handheld comes equipped with the headband-free w.ear(TM) headphones and an in-line remote controller, which provides access to audio functions while the device is tucked away in a purse or pocket.
Also new is the incorporation of a ``Hold'' button. When activated, this feature turns off the LCD screen while still playing audio, preserving battery life.
Seeing is Believing
Sony's CLIE PEG-N710C handheld is the first Palm OS-based device that offers a color screen with 320 x 320-pixel resolution. The improved resolution not only enhances text clarity, but also renders photo-quality images. With the supplied PictureGear(TM) Pocket application, users can view high-resolution images of friends and family with minimal pixelation around the edges or discernable grid lines.
The new handheld also supports existing Palm OS-based applications running on standard 160 x 160-pixel resolution. These applications will appear just as they do on standard Palm OS-based devices.
As with digital audio content, the CLIE PEG-N710C handheld reads digital images optimized by the PictureGear Pocket application directly from the Memory Stick removable media card.
To ensure that lighting circumstance does not diminish the viewing experience, the new handheld utilizes a front-lit reflective TFT screen. In low-light conditions, the front lights illuminate the screen and, in direct sunlight, the reflective screen (with front light off) utilizes natural lighting to optimize outdoor viewing.
Jog Dial Enhancement
Last year, Sony introduced the popular Jog Dial(TM) navigator on the current CLIE PEG-S300 handheld, which allows for single-hand, scroll-and-select menu navigation in supporting applications. With the new second-generation product, Sony has added a ``Back'' button that allows for incremental back screen searches. Located directly below the Jog Dial navigator, the new ``Back'' button offers users even quicker on-the-go access to personal information.
CLIE Handheld Developers
Sony's third-party developer's Web site (http://www.us.sonypdadev.com) provides the tools and documentation required for individual and corporate programmers building applications unique to Sony's Memory Stick media, Jog Dial navigator with ``Back'' button, and high-resolution screen. The CLIE handheld developers program currently has 5,000 registered developers working to create compelling hardware and software applications for both the first and second-generation CLIE handhelds.
Memory Stick Media: A Network That's Millions of Users Strong

Do the Napster math
By John C. Dvorak, PC Magazine
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/htx/zd/20010501/tc/do_the_napster_math_1.html
Record industry execs could learn a thing or two from Napster's electronic distribution model.
COMMENTARY--By my calculations, the record companies can make as much or more money by abandoning their old business model and going with Napster's. They should look at the numbers, do the math, and then form a massive joint venture with Napster. Then again, why do that when they can have both business models and make twice as much money?
When Napster first rolled out, it had perhaps 50,000 users, and as a music distribution conduit, there was nothing compelling about it. The concept made no sense to the record industry, which saw it as a glorified bootlegging operation. But along with the MP3 movement, Napster introduced the notion of practical electronic music distribution, which appealed to early adopters and technology nuts.
Once the RIAA lawsuits began, however, we saw an oft-repeated phenomenon: incredible free publicity for a little-known product, thanks to litigation. Napster became a household name within months. But instead of the record companies dealing with 50,000 dedicated users making copies of their music, they now have to face over 50 million.
The sheer number of users and how this changes the math of electronic distribution was overlooked by the RIAA. According to the RIAA, the CD business is a $13 billion market. Of this $13 billion, a serious chunk of money goes to distribution and manufacturing. It's hard to determine the net profits after all the expenses and overhead, but it's probably only a few billion.
Add it up
Meanwhile, many Napster users have said that they will pay up to $20 a month to keep this service alive. The company has suggested $5 a month for access. Exactly how many people would pay is unknown, but I suspect the numbers will be high. And if the service were legal and ethical, I'm certain many people who are on the fence would join. Adding special international servers and more specialized subsystems would also make a subscription model more appealing. With good marketing, more services, and legal, free trading of all content 24 hours a day, I think maintaining 50 million users is possible.
Napster could become the dominant, worldwide music distribution source. And being the big gorilla, there would be no competition, because there would not be enough critical mass on any other system.
Now imagine if the record companies joined the deal. ASCAP, BMI, and other international royalty distribution organizations could form a consortium to oversee the trading. They could monitor which songs are being downloaded for the purposes of royalty payments to the artists and record companies, which could come from the subscription revenue.
I think $10 a month is the right fee. I'd pay it in a minute. If 50 million users each paid $10 a month, or $120 a year, for unlimited access to everything, the service would gross $6 billion annually. Most of this money would be redistributed to the artists and labels, as determined by various contracts. Britney Spears would still make most of the money, but nobody can complain.
The $6 billion a year would be right off the top and amount to almost pure profits, because the cost of distribution is nil. Possibly, the record companies and artists actually could make more money from this source than from conventional CDs.
Going both ways
But the kicker is that the record companies could do both! Anyone who has experimented with Napster knows that tracking down all the good songs from your favorite artists is more trouble than it's worth. I know plenty of people who use Napster for the occasional hard-to-find song, but still concentrate their efforts on buying CDs. Why would this change? In real terms, Napster hurts CD sales only in situations where a one-hit wonder has a CD full of junk that nobody wants.
So Napster sits there as the perfect opportunity for record companies to profit. All the record labels allow FM and AM radio to broadcast their songs for an ASCAP fee; why not use Napster in a similar scenario? But this time the fee would be more substantial. Apparently only a few corporations, such as Bertelsmann, can even sense the possibilities. This situation is like a silver prospector stumbling onto a rich gold mine, then closing it because it doesn't contain any silver. What are they thinking?
In real terms, Napster hurts CD sales only in situations where a one-hit wonder has a CD full of junk that nobody wants.
Second Boeing-built XM Satellite at Sea, Ready for Launch
Spacecraft Pair Will Deliver State-of-the-Art Nationwide Radio Programming Service
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/010501/0480.html
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2001--An official launch date and time have been set for XM ``Roll,'' the second of two powerful Boeing 702-model spacecraft built for XM Satellite Radio Inc. by Boeing Satellite Systems (BSS), a unit of The Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA - news).
With the Sea Launch ocean platform well on its way to its launch site on the equator, XM ``Roll'' is officially scheduled to launch on May 8, with the 45-minute launch window opening at 3:10 p.m. PDT (6:10 p.m. EDT and 10:10 p.m. GMT). The Sea Launch platform left its Long Beach home port on April 25.
The launch of Roll will come less than two months after its twin, dubbed ``Rock,'' was successfully launched March 18, also by Sea Launch. Roll will operate in geosynchronous orbit at 85 degrees West longitude; Rock is stationed at 115 degrees West longitude.
``Boeing is proud to deliver the second half of the XM Satellite Radio space segment,'' said Randy Brinkley, president of Boeing Satellite Systems. ``Just as our technology once helped kick off digital direct-to-home television in the United States, these two Boeing 702 spacecraft will enable XM to deliver an exciting new kind of radio programming to subscribers across the country. Long live Rock and Roll.''
Each of XM's satellites is designed to provide 18 kilowatts of total spacecraft power at beginning of life. To generate spacecraft power, each of the satellite's two solar wings employ five panels of high-efficiency, dual-junction gallium arsenide solar cells developed by Spectrolab, another Boeing company. When fully deployed, the solar wings span 132.5 feet and the antennas extend to 46.6 feet.
Together, the two spacecraft will deliver 100 channels of crystal-clear, digital-quality music, news and information programming to XM radios across the United States.
The XM spacecraft carry a unique digital audio radio payload built by Alcatel Space Industries. The payload features two active transponders, each with 16 active (and six spare) 228-watt traveling wave tube amplifiers generating approximately 3,000 watts of RF signal power, making these the most powerful commercial transponders ever built.
``This is truly an exciting time for XM Satellite Radio, and for all radio listeners throughout the country,'' said Hugh Panero, president and chief executive officer of XM Satellite Radio. ``With one powerful satellite in orbit and the second one ready to launch, plus our new Broadcast Center, XM chips in production and XM-ready radios on retail shelves, we are within months of inaugurating our revolutionary nationwide digital audio radio programming.''
The spacecraft will weigh approximately 9,800 pounds at launch and 6,500 pounds in orbit. It has two 16.4-foot folding deployable S-band transmit reflectors and one X-band global receive antenna.
To provide 15 years' service, the Boeing 702 carries the flight-proven xenon ion propulsion system (XIPS) for all on-orbit maneuvering. The XIPS were built by Boeing Electron Dynamic Devices Inc.
XM will transform radio, an industry that has seen little technological change since FM, almost 40 years ago. XM will create and package up to 100 channels of digital-quality sound and provide coast-to-coast coverage of music, news, sports, talk, comedy and children's programming. XM won several awards at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January, including ``Best of CES'' in the automotive category. Service is scheduled to begin this summer.
XM-ready radios are being manufactured by such household names as Sony, Alpine, Pioneer, Clarion, Blaupunkt, Delphi-Delco, Visteon, Panasonic and Sanyo; and are available for sale by retailers including Circuit City, Best Buy, Sears, RadioShack franchisee dealer stores and Crutchfield.
XM's strategic investors include America's leading car, radio and satellite TV companies -- General Motors, American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Clear Channel Communications, DIRECTV and Motient Corp. (Nasdaq:MTNT - news), the company's largest shareholder. XM has a long-term distribution agreement with General Motors to integrate XM radios into its vehicles commencing in 2001. For more information, visit the XM Web site at www.xmradio.com.
Alcatel builds next-generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data networking solutions to established and new carriers as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 130,000 employees and sales of EURO 31 billion in 2000, Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries.
Boeing Satellite Systems Inc. is the world's leading manufacturer of commercial communications satellites, and is also a major provider of space systems, satellites and payloads for national defense, science and environmental applications. The company was formed in October 2000 when Boeing acquired the Hughes Electronics satellite manufacturing companies, which included Hughes Space and Communications Co., Hughes Electron Dynamics, Spectrolab Inc. and Hughes Electronics' 50 percent share of HRL Laboratories.
The Boeing Co., with headquarters in Seattle, is the largest aerospace company in the world and the United States' leading exporter. It is the world's largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft, and the largest NASA contractor. The company's capabilities in aerospace also include rotorcraft, electronic and defense systems, missiles, rocket engines, launch vehicles, and advanced information and communication systems.
The company has an extensive global reach with customers in 145 countries and manufacturing operations throughout the United States, Canada and Australia.

Six Million Consumers Call Music Industry Every Day -- and the Industry Fails to Answer
http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/05-01-2001/0001482866&...
MUNDELEIN, Ill., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- A survey released last Tuesday by
the Washington-based Pew Internet and American Life Project revealed that the
number one use of the Web is downloading music files.
Six million people a day are using the Internet as their personal source
for music access, according to the study, but most of the product is
unauthorized and reaching their ears for free. Teenagers and college students
aren't the only ones downloading files. Twenty-nine percent of adults
surveyed said they've been downloading music.
The results of a similar survey by Pew last year indicated that seventy-
nine percent of Internet users who downloaded music didn't pay for the songs.
This means more than just billions of dollars in lost revenues for
entertainment companies and artists. More than six million potential
consumers every day are reaching out to the music industry, expressing
interest in their archives and current products, and the entertainment
companies are failing to reach back.
A Mundelein, Ill.-based software company, Veridisc(TM), has developed the
FairPlay(TM) Digital Rights Management (DRM) system that strengthens users'
relationships with musicians, studios and other content originators. Veridisc
and FairPlay can link consumers rationally with content originators, perform
DRM functions and maximize marketing potential -- whether or not there is a
retail charge for access to the digital file content. Indeed, Veridisc can
perform these functions not only today, but even for digital content
distributed months or years earlier.
Veridisc CEO, Greg Halpern, is available to discuss how companies that
focus on their customers -- and make it easy for them to obtain and pay for a
wider range of products and services -- will be better prepared to dominate
the next stage in the evolution of Web-based entertainment.
Veridisc(TM) and FairPlay(TM) are patent-pending systems that manage
distribution and access to protected digital content while strengthening
customer relationships. Veridisc is a subsidiary of Circle Group Internet.

The new spin: Paying for online tunes
By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY
http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/tech/review/2001-04-26-musicnet.htm
Richard Drew, AP
Rob Glaser of RealNetworks wants to bring a world of online entertainment to you, for a price.
SEATTLE — Rock freak Rob Glaser has 2,000 songs on his computer's hard drive, ripped from his CD collection of such faves as Foo Fighters, U2 and Poe, plus Napster downloads, mostly of outtakes, live cuts and TV performances. "I tip my hat to Napster not just for showing there'd be a demand for download music, but also for proving that a lot of what people want to download isn't just the studio versions," he says. But Glaser's not your ordinary techno-geek music fan.
He's the CEO of RealNetworks. Even if you haven't heard of him, his RealPlayer software likely is on your PC if you've ever listened to audio or watched video via the Net.
His latest enterprise reflects his admiration for Napster. It could be the biggest, most viable replacement for the wildly successful online free-swap service, now that Napster's on the ropes after months of legal setbacks.
Glaser, 38, has united three of the five major record labels, Warner, EMI and Bertelsmann's BMG, with his RealNetworks and America Online to form MusicNet, a paid — and fully licensed — subscription service, with tens of thousands of songs available from each label, to begin by early fall.
Beyond picking up the slack from Napster (which also hopes to transform itself into a pay service in July), Glaser has far loftier goals: that you won't be able to listen to most music or many sports online without his software. Real recently started Webcasting baseball games to monthly, paying subscribers, part of a 3-year, $20 million alliance with Major League Baseball.
Those deals, plus MusicNet, give Real a major advantage over its Pacific Northwest arch rival (and Glaser's former employer) Microsoft and its competing Windows Media format. "It's like that commercial where they don't take American Express," Glaser says. "Major League Baseball won't be available for the next three years using the Microsoft media player. Anyone wants to listen to a baseball game online, they'll have to come to us."
But music, and its huge, proven online attraction, is the centerpiece of the plan. A study just out from the Pew Internet & American Life Project shows nearly 30 million American adults — 29% of all adult Net users, including more than half of Net users ages 18-29 — have downloaded music files. On any given day, 6 million adult Web surfers are downloading music, twice the number making any retail purchase online.
"The success of Napster shows us that people like having access to digital music, where they can download it, organize it and share what they're interested in with their friends," Glaser says.
MusicNet's base price will start at around $10 a month and continue upward for access to more songs, for the right to move them to a portable device or to burn them to a CD.
But will people be willing to pay when Napster has offered them virtually the entire history of recorded song for free?
"There's a whole list of things people like in addition to it being free," Glaser says. A paid service will offer "reliability and quality, and this will be appealing to many people."
And the free ride is nearing an end. Napster, under court order to remove much copyrighted music from its site, is blocking access to tracks by such artists as Janet Jackson, Metallica, Madonna and The Beatles.
The record industry, which to date has sat on the sidelines, is now set to pounce. By year's end, the online landscape will look radically different. Besides MusicNet:
•Universal and Sony plan a summer launch for their subscription service on Yahoo, Duet. Unlike MusicNet, which will offer both downloads and listen-only streaming, Duet is streaming-only, which lets subscribers listen while they're connected to the Net but doesn't transfer ownership of a music file.
•MTV will offer pay-per-song downloads on its MTV.com and VH1.com sites from all five major labels. A handful of tracks are available now, with 10,000 expected by summer.
•Napster, with backing from Bertelsmann, presumably will be competing with MusicNet when it starts charging. Analyst Phil Leigh, with research firm Raymond James, says Napster's brand name and huge pool of 70 million registered users "makes it hard to beat" when it relaunches.
At Bertelsmann's urging, MusicNet's contract with the record labels calls for it to license its content to Napster after several legal and security hurdles are cleared. "We're actively talking to them, and I hope we can put something together," Glaser says.
Theoretically, Napster and MusicNet initially could have equivalent content, which would make it "a real horse race," Leigh says. "Real is happy either way, because their primary objective is to grow the Real technology."
RealPlayer already is the de facto media player for AOL and its nearly 30 million subscribers. Around the world, some 170 million users have registered and downloaded the free player software.
Though Microsoft doesn't register users for its media players, the company readily concedes that more people use RealPlayer than its Windows Media Player. It competitively makes presentations at trade shows and to reporters and analysts to demonstrate its contention that content looks or sounds better in Windows Media.
Nonetheless, "you can hardly go to a Web site and find (an) audio clip not available in the Real format," says Steve Coffey of Net measurement service Jupiter Media Metrix. "Yes, many users also have Windows Media, but ... there's definitely more activity with the RealPlayer in actual use."
Media Metrix shows Real in 26 million U.S. homes, up 47% from last year; Microsoft is in 21.5 million homes, up 31%. "Yeah, they're ahead, but a year ago we weren't even on the map," Microsoft's Michael Aldridge says. "We have a neck-and-neck race now."
Microsoft has made the most headway in the portable player market. Some 60 devices support the Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, intended to replace MP3s. Virtually none play RealPlayer's answer to WMA, RealAudio8 files.
Still, "we upload 500,000 copies a day of the RealPlayer to consumers," says RealNetworks general manager Steve Banfield. "We support more Microsoft users than Microsoft does. Windows Media Player 7 doesn't work with Windows 95, but RealPlayer 8 does. We're not here to promote an agenda, selling new operating systems, but to make the stuff work."
Glaser quit Microsoft in 1993, believing that "the Internet could be used as a broadcasting medium." He began what was then called Progressive Networks with the idea of giving away software, selling premium upgrades and, when he had enough customers, offering exclusive programming.
Real began its $9.95 monthly GoldPass service last August, with audio and video of NBA basketball games, Sports Illustrated swimsuit models and ABC News documentaries. Now there's baseball, too.
"We saw this as similar to what cable TV was in 1979," Glaser says. "Something modest that will be continually improved. It flew in the face of conventional wisdom — people said no one would pay for content on the Internet."
But GoldPass now has 200,000 paying subscribers. At the company's lavish headquarters overlooking Seattle's Lake Washington — complete with indoor bowling alley, foosball and pool tables and free coffee and sodas for all — company execs talk of additional offerings that can eventually be sold to customers, including old TV shows, local newscasts and other sports and music events.
"The Internet got off on the wrong foot by conditioning everyone that everything would be free," says Scott Erlich, RealNetworks' vice president of programming. He's one of two former Fox TV execs helping the company "monetize" content.
Real, unlike most other Net companies, is making money ($3 million in the first quarter), but like most, its stock price has dropped dramatically — from a high of $160 to its recent $10 — sending Glaser's personal net worth tumbling from $2 billion to $400 million. Still, the corporate digs are as fancy as any from the high-flying era, and Glaser says, "I have no complaints. I'm doing just fine."
When not jetting to Hong Kong (Asia is Real's second biggest region), Las Vegas (to attend this week's National Association of Broadcasters meeting) or New York (to meet with MusicNet partners), Glaser bowls at the office, downloads songs onto his portable MP3 player, trades e-mails with rock stars he's gotten to know or just hangs out with them.
"Here's this Ivy League-educated guy who worked for Microsoft, and I've never once heard him talk about computers," says singer/songwriter POE, who met Glaser shortly after her first album, Hello, was released in 1995. "He's a lot of fun to be with, loves to talk about the arts and hear stories about things that go wrong on tour."
Opening for Depeche Mode this summer, POE introduced her latest album, Haunted, on the Real.com site last Halloween and has seen much of her work promoted there, as well. "It's not like I was selling millions of records when Rob said, 'Let's do this,' " she says. "I really respect a guy who supports the artists he loves, even if they're not the flavor of the month."
Call it a real love of music.
Nobucks, I have reviewed the published Treo specs vs the PJB-100 and find them to be almost identical as far as analog output (audio) specifications are concerned. As far as the digital circuitry (decompression/conversion from digital to analog), I have yet to see specs for either product. (Although I'm sure that they must exist somewhere.) The availability of multiple codecs in the Treo is a big advantage over the MP3-only PJB-100, as each codec has its own particular characteristics which could lead to better peceived audio playback characteristics than the MP3 codec alone.
Hopefully a thorough technical review of the Treo will appear soon and confirm what we suspect: that EDIG has created a superior player while minimizing the hardware requirements for same. Although software can be costly to develop, the hardware and assembly labor ultimately accounts for the bulk of a player's cost. By reducing the hardware, Treo also achieves savings in assembly costs.

I suppose that for all my lurking and reading of great posts by many, its time I take a turn.
Turns out I had the make a business trip to San Diego and I had a few extra hours in my schedule. So, I called Robert Putnam and arranged a brief visit figuring I may never again get the opportunity. What follows is a summary.
I managed to find their office without any trouble. The parking while not packed, had quite a few cars. After being greeted by Robert, I had a quick walk through the facility (short leash) as we went to Robert's office and was able to observe a few people getting some unknown, confidential and secret work done. Most were hunkered down in their bunkers (er, cubes) and due to the confidential nature of the work and business, I was not allowed to wander around and see what they were really up to.
In general, I would have to say that much of the discussion was of the "future's so bright I gotta wear shades" variety. As would be expected, there is not much real information that can be gleaned from such a discussion that has not already been made public. Robert was very good (careful) about this, and I would not want to get them in trouble (but asked anyway).
EDIG continues to work with multiple clients. The "double digits" was again used. These are expected to result in future revenues (royalties), and royalties are expected from some in this current quarter. How much and timing for future royalties are not clear.
Real product (s?) are also expected this quarter. Kind of obvious if royalties are to start flowing. I got the impression that more than one will be introduced, but this is art, not science.
I asked about competing devices such as the Nomad Jukebox. Robert believes the EDIG design to be far better. Longer battery life, better sound, less cost (better software, less hardware). I was able to listen to the little flash memory based music player. It did sound pretty good to my ears (I dabble in audio and recording), and three codecs were played - MP3 AAC and WMA. I think the AAC sounded the best.
The headphones were good $100 sony's. This will make about anything sound better, particularly the low frequency bass (which everyone wants to hear), but they will also provide enough definition to hear crap. I did not hear any crap (assuming an MP3 at 128kbs is not that crappy - which it can be at times).
I asked about the current jukebox, and all were out for review.
I asked about the voice activated juke box. While not available, I was assured that "significant development work" has been (and is being?) done.
I asked Robert about the prevalence of MP3 and its potential as king of the hill since it was first and is widely used. Interesting perspective here. Why would the music companies want MP3? It is associated with piracy. Look for other codecs in order to get away from this relationship. Also, expect, at least to start, multiple different codecs as the music big wigs would not want to be held hostage to one codec and one company (son of microsoft). I can at least see logic in these arguments which would lend support to an effective multi-codec player, and perhaps give EDIG that competitive advantage once the content starts to roll out.
They are hopeful on continuing business with Lanier (Platinum), but are waiting on concrete Lanier news.
They are looking at a variety of other products. A long list of potential applications you have heard before. How real, we will have to wait and see.
I asked about engineers, I seem to remember the response as 23. I think that is about double a year ago.
Concerning cash position, they felt comfortable going forward for perhaps 12 - 14 months. If the revenues roll in, then should be able to avoid more financing. But...the future is always uncertain (kind of like the dark side). Believe the series C shares outstanding is still the same as reported at end of December.
The quarter just ended result will be released in June following a full audit of year end numbers.
It is anticipated (hoped) that more announcements will be made this current quarter as was mpreviously indicated.
I asked if officers/directors might be buying stock in the open market. Did not get a good answer (expected). Kind of like - on these salaries? And, that these were decisons of the officers alone. He did mention the tax hit he and Fred Falk took on options as a kind of substitute for open market buying support.
That's about it as I did not want to take up any more time (about 1/2 hour). The meeting was very cordial and upbeat. Robert made me feel welcome which was appreciated. And, I appreciate the time he took out of his day as well.
Did I get all my questions answered. No. But, that is asking for too much. Clearly, there is life at EDIG and work is going on. Potential is tremendous. Risk, certainly. Potential reward risk ratio...pretty good IMHO.

OT: Sony Music Entertainment Japan Selects Digital Island to Deliver Media-Rich Content to Music Fans Worldwide
http://sf-web1.businesswire.com/cgi-bin/f_headline.cgi?day0/211132261&ticker=isld
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 2001--
Digital Island Accelerates Performance by More Than 30 Percent On Japan's Fifth-Most Visited Web Site and Delivers Content to 160 Million Users Monthly
Digital Island, Inc. (Nasdaq:ISLD) today announced that Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), Inc. (SMEJ) has selected Digital Island's Footprint(R) content delivery service to accelerate the performance of Japan's hottest music entertainment Web site, www.sonymusic.co.jp. SMEJ chose Footprint to speed up the delivery of animations, images, ad banners and other media-rich content, including music downloads, on the Sony Music Online Japan Web site -- Japan's fifth-most trafficked Web site, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.
Without incurring the large capital expenditures of building its own global network infrastructure, SMEJ experienced a 30 percent performance improvement by outsourcing to Digital Island. In addition, by managing what content is cached on the Footprint network, SMEJ further reduced its IT operations costs and can now remain focused on aggressively promoting its record label artists, including Soul Scramble, Ken Hirai, Siam Shade and many other Japanese pop stars.
"At first, we were considering load-balancing to enhance the server performance," said Nobuyuki Suzuki, manager of the Engineering Section at Digital Network Group, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan). "Digital Island's content delivery service proved to be the most efficient option for solving our problem of delivering large amounts of media-rich content."
Footprint also provides SMEJ with a scalable platform to serve the skyrocketing demand for live performances, news and pictures of Japan's biggest music entertainers. Today, 160 million users visit the Web site monthly. Scalability is also critical as more consumers access SMEJ's content through mobile phones, which require superior speed and consistency to alleviate the limited bandwidth capacity of wireless devices.
"Digital Island's content delivery service improves performance, reduces operational costs and drives revenue for Web sites built to serve creative, media-rich content," said Tim Wilson, chief marketing officer, Digital Island. "Sony Music Entertainment's selection of our Footprint service confirms Digital Island as the preferred outsource solution for media and entertainment companies."
Digital Island's Footprint content delivery service stores, or caches, Web content closer to users at the edge of the network to ensure a fast, consistent and reliable online experience. When a consumer requests a Web page, Footprint seamlessly directs the query to the optimal server through Digital Island's patented Best Distributor Selection technology.

OT: Fujitsu Introduces 64 Megabit Dual-Operation Flash Memory with 32 Megabit Mobile FCRAM in Stacked Multi-Chip Package
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2001--
Designed for Next Generation of Cell Phones Now in Planning Stages in U.S.
Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. (FMI) today introduced a new stacked Multi-Chip Package (MCP) with 64 Mbit dual-operation flash memory and 32 Mbit Mobile FCRAM(TM), designed to provide the low power and high density required for new cellular telephones.
Fujitsu's new MB84VD23483EJ combines the NOR-type flash memory and the mobile FCRAM with an asynchronous interface, which is compatible with static RAM. Power consumption for flash in standby mode is only five microamps, maximum, and only 100 microamps for mobile FCRAM. In power-down mode, consumption is only 10 microamps. Access times are typically 90ns for both flash and FCRAM. Power-supply requirements are 2.7V to 3.1V.
The MCP's low power, high density and SRAM-compatible interface make it an excellent device for the new generation of cell phones that provide email, imaging, Internet access, games and other features, according to Fumio Baba, vice president of FMI's System Devices Group.
"This spring, the new IMT 2000 mobile-communication-system service begins in Japan, and represents the first stage of a worldwide trend toward comprehensive cellular phones that provide users with a new set of features ranging from Internet-page downloads to video games," said Baba. "The timing of this introduction in the U.S. is excellent, because the leaders of third-generation mobile technology are now in the early stages of their device-evaluation programs, and the new stacked multi-chip package meets all their low power, high speed and high density requirements."
The new MCP continues Fujitsu's worldwide leadership in leading-edge packaging solutions for next-generation cellular, computing and networking designs, according to Baba.
Samples of the MB84VD23483EJ MCP in plastic BGA packages will be available by the end of May, and mass production will start in October. Pricing will start at approximately $60 each.

Universal Music Group Buys EMusic
http://www.mp3newswire.net/stories/2001/emusicsold.html
By Richard Menta- 4/5/01
We predicted this day would come last January in our article titled "Who Will Buy EMusic". It wasn't a surprise, like other net sites EMusic, with only $10 million in the bank and running through its cash, needed a buyer. Unlike most Net music sites, EMusic had some very valuable assets that the major labels wanted and needed.
The most valuable asset EMusic has is a 10,000 customer user base who actually paid for their Net music. As we said in our article last January:
…EMusic has collected the largest list of digital music fans who are ACTIVELY paying for digital music downloads. This is the holy grail for the major labels who many feel have lost their opportunity to train Netizens that online music is something you pay for as opposed to something you trade for free…If you were Universal or EMI or Sony or Time Warner, you would want those 10,00 user names and data, the seasoned net music delivery staff Emusic has already developed, the Rolling Stone and Downbeat brand names, the possession of the digital rights of the independent record companies as well as your own. Most of all, you don't want Bertelsmann to have it, you don't want to give them the power.
Today, Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired EMusic.com and its assets.
When we wrote the above EMusic was selling for just under a buck. With the further collapse of the Net industry on Wall Street, Universal was able to snap the company up for half of that. The proposed acquisition price is $0.57 per fully diluted share (shareholders won't be happy with that low a price).
"Despite the obviously challenging business environment, we are extremely pleased with the continued strong growth of our downloadable music subscription service," said Gene Hoffman, EMusic president and CEO. "With our EMusic.com and RollingStone.com Web sites, our company has taken a recognized leadership position in online music, a market that continues to generate great excitement and interest among both vendors and consumers alike."
Universal plans to morph EMusic into its recently announced Duet service, a partnership between themselves and Sony. The EMusic acquisition means the two record labels don't have to tackle the cost and time demands of building a Net music delivery service from scratch. They also start out with an instant customer base of 10,000 users with a history of paying for Net downloads.
But, one of the best assets also picked up was the digital rights to thousands of tracks from independent labels that EMusic purchased over the years. This has a two-fold effect.
First, they own the Net rights to the music of their competitors, something the independents who signed with EMusic are probably not all that happy about. If EMusic folded, those rights would have reverted back to them. Now UMG has it and considering Universal's known market practices (that 50/50 split deal the independents now enjoy with EMusic can diminish with a little creative accounting on UMG's part) we might see a further tightening of the oligopoly that has driven CD's to the $19.00 list price range.
Second many analysts, including us, feel that for a new competitor to Napster to work, they must offer more than music from just one label. Duet will now have the music of the two major labels (accounting for over 40% of CD's sold) and the music of 700 independent labels.
When you think about it, do you know what the best thing of all about this buyout is for Universal? That Bertelsmann indeed did not grab it for themselves and create a Napster, EMusic, CDNow troika.

Some Comments from Robert! (BusyBump)
http://ragingbull.lycos.com/mboard/boards.cgi?read=655597&board=EDIG
I will not rehash all the subjects Trillium covered in his earlier excellent post, only to say that, as usual, his post was accurate.
A few interesting comments:
...The MP2000 is ready for immediate production. Production samples have been out since last fall, in the hands of OEMs. CONTENT STILL remains the key. The OEMs have heard the promises of the past from the record labels (even including specific dates!) that didn't materialize! They believe that this time is for real BUT...although the announcements have been made, the actual content is not yet available! The OEMs also believe that Edig's internet music platform is "ready for prime time". Currently, it is planned to be primarily flash-based but an IBM Microdrive-enabled version is being discussed.
...Concerning the 4 new platforms, announcements concerning these products, as well as prototypes and OEM relationships will be forthcoming this quarter.
...Asked how we became associated with F&H, he said that there were these considerations: a firm with a proven track record, with national & international presence, that could effectively bring Edig to the public eye, and that had an office in the S.D. area, enabling a close working environment.
...concerning Creative's price reduction (this is similar to Trillium's post)...RP couldn't say what their motivation was (inventory reduction, feeling the pressure, etc.), but acknowledged that our OEMs were very aware of Creative's moves, that each would bring out their own version of our JB with competitve pricing based upon features. He said that it was generally accepted that $199-299 will be the target price point for these products to "get the ball rolling!"
...asked about who exactly would be manufacturing our Samsung music player, he said that Samsung may do the manufacturing themselves or could possibly use one of their other manufacturers or even, one of Edig's manufacturers. He said that announcements concerning more manufacturing relationships (Edig's) would be forthcoming.
That's about it. Nothing earth-shaking, just some clarification and a little insight.

Volan Design Wins 2001 Medical Design Excellence Award for Waterpik Technologies' Waterpik Flosser; Waterpik Flosser Design Represents Innovation and Engineering Excellence
04/04/2001
Business Wire
(Copyright (c) 2001, Business Wire)
BOULDER, Colo.--(BW HealthWire)--April 4, 2001--Volan Design(TM) LLC, an award-winning international product and brand development company, has recently been honored as a winner of the fourth annual Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition.
Volan Design and Waterpik Technologies, Inc. won a top award for the product design of the Waterpik(TM) Flosser in the category of dental instruments, equipment and supplies.
The MDEA competition, the premier awards program for the medical technology community, is the only such program devoted exclusively to recognizing contributions and advancements in the design of medical products. Volan Design and Waterpik will receive the award at a ceremony to be held June 6, 2001, during the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East 2001 Conference and Exposition at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Volan Design's winning Waterpik Flosser design will also be on display in the MDEA booth at the show.
An impartial, multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors -- with expertise in the fields of biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine, nursing, diagnostics, and medical packaging -- performed a comprehensive review of all the entries. The jury ultimately selected 28 winners in 10 medical product categories. MDEA-winning products are recognized for their excellence in the areas of product innovation, design and engineering excellence, end-user benefit, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing and healthcare delivery.
Commenting on the winning products, Michael E. Wiklund, jury chair and a human factors engineering consultant with the American Institutes for Research (Concord, MA), stated: "Many of the manufacturers started with a ubiquitous product and achieved remarkable functional and human factor improvements. Their breakthroughs were mostly tied to analyzing how people interacted with existing devices and finding ways to improve those interactions dramatically. The winning manufacturers sweated the details, paying close attention to industrial design qualities such as form, fit, and finish, resulting in a refined appearance and smooth mechanical interactions."
"We were very pleased to be recognized with a Medical Design Excellence Award," said Volan Design Principal Greg Volan. "Good design is playing an increasingly important role in product development and it is having a positive impact on the marketplace."
Product Design Goals
Waterpik Technologies and Volan Design initially defined three key design goals for the battery-operated Flosser. First, the device had to be just as effective and easier to use than conventional dental floss. This was achieved through design elements which included low handle vibration, easily replaceable tips and overall smooth operation. Second, it had to operate in a simple and intuitive manner for a wide range of users. This was accomplished with a unique tip design, single control button, multiple color-coded heads, large tactile grip surface and a lightweight size. "We designed the device in such a way that inserting the tip into your mouth is a completely natural movement, acting as an extension of your fingertip, and making the product simple to use," said Volan Design's Director of Design Bill Stephens.
MDEA Sponsors
The MDEA competition recognizes the engineers, scientists and designers who are responsible for the groundbreaking innovations that are changing the face of healthcare. The MDEA program is presented by Canon Communications LLC and sponsored by MedSource Technologies, DuPont Tyvek, Agion Technologies LLC, Battelle, Avail, Colorado MEDtech, IBA Medical Sterilization & Analytical Labs, and Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry magazine, as well as the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, an interdisciplinary organization of professionals involved in the human factors field.

Data Shows RealNetworks Widening Its Lead Among Both Home and Workplace Users
http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/04-05-2001/0001463197&...
SEATTLE, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- RealNetworks(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), the
global leader in Internet media delivery, today announced two new studies
which show commanding usage leads for both the Real format and RealPlayer(R).
The first study, released by Nielsen//NetRatings, reveals that home
consumption of Internet audio and video content in the Real format reached an
all time high in February 2001 -- more than double that of its nearest
competitor. A second report, containing recently revised data from Jupiter
Media Metrix, shows use of RealPlayer far outstripping the usage of all other
media players, and accounts for previously unreported RealPlayer usage through
AOL.
According to Nielsen//NetRatings, the Real format was more than twice as
popular as its nearest competitor in February. During that month, more than
29.6 million home users accessed content in Real formats, an increase of
1.6 million users since December 2000. Usage of the nearest competing media
format over the same period lagged far behind RealNetworks, and fell to
12.5 million in February.
RealNetworks today also announced that Media Metrix has now adjusted its
meter to count millions of AOL users (versions 6.0 and Plus) who have been
using RealPlayer as their default, embedded media player as the result of an
agreement reached last year between AOL and RealNetworks. In earlier reports,
Media Metrix failed to measure this usage, resulting in a significant
undercount of RealPlayer.
Based on its new, more accurate methodology, Media Metrix now reports that
in January 2001, RealPlayer was used by 25.0 million Internet home users, and
10.2 million work users -- a one-year increase of 49 percent (8.2 million)
among home users and 57 percent (3.5 million) among work users. Growth for
Windows Media Player was slower, by comparison, increasing by only 31 percent
(5.1 million) among home users during that same one-year period. Home use of
QuickTime player fell by 700,000 users during the year-long period. Media
Metrix earlier this week issued a news release
( http://www.jup.com/company/pressrelease.jsp?doc=pr010403 ) with this new
January data, which also adjusted upward previously reported RealPlayer usage
data for November and December 2000.
"No matter what yardstick you use to measure success, RealNetworks is the
undisputed leader in Internet media usage," said Richard Cohen, senior vice
president, Consumer Division, RealNetworks, Inc. "This latest data from
Nielsen//NetRatings and Media Metrix confirms once again what we've known all
along. Consumers consistently choose RealPlayer over all other media players
because it provides the highest quality, most reliable access to the greatest
multimedia content the web has to offer."

I posted on this board yesterday some things I see happening in EDIG's arena. I'm not sure this post will make any sense to anyone who has not read my first statements. If so you will have to search out my previous post for clarification.
Again as before I won't respond to questions, or comments regarding my post. I apologize if this offends people, but I really don't have the time to search through the posts here trying to locate a post that might be directed at me. It has also been my experience in viewing boards in the past that people who respond negatively toward a post usually, let me say not always, but again, usually have no intention of debating the issue, but are more intent in taking the poster off on a tangent where the original post and poster's integrity are called into question.
I have nothing to prove on a message board. What I say can be taken however each individual wants to take it.
I spend most of my time following trends. I have currently been focusing on the area of digital music and its distribution channels. I came across EDIG quite by chance while following leads on portable devices. It is a rather compelling story. I see some issues up ahead that EDIG will need to deal with, but they have a product that does seem to do as suggested. They also have a window of opportunity to make inroads into the portable device market.
I spoke of Creative being wounded at this time. If you look at what they are currently saying, and doing , you will see this to be true.
A company that is laying off 10% of its workforce, and consolidating its operations, i.e. closing a PA. plant and moving operations to Singapore is not playing from a position of strength. Reducing expenses and taking a restructuring charge are not signs of a thriving company.
Cutting the price on their Jukebox, while necessary, can not help their bottom line. It may be argued that what's the difference selling 10 for $1, or 1 for $10, revenue is the same. Yes, but with cost factored in, it becomes a different picture. If each of the units cost you .90 to make, then selling the 10 for $1 reaps you $1.00 profit. Selling the 1 for $10 reaps you $9.10.
Look for addition guidance lower as Creative works through its inventory.
This is not to say Creative is a bad company. Virtually all tech related companies are experiencing similar downturns. Its just at this time EDIG has an opportunity to capitalize on Creatives problems.
EDIG is not having these same difficulties. With the exception of their stock price they are currently in decent position. Cash in the bank, no debt, and hiring. They also have a timely product that allows first to market response. They are either close to, or in production of a 2g player that currently holds honors among the best out there.
As I stated before I watch trends. The company I am currently focusing on has been in the news lately, and will probably help shape this entire industry. I won't post it here as I believe that would be spamming. My focus on this board is EDIG, and it's competitors. EDIG does have a viable chance in this market. Time will tell if they accomplish there goals.
Incidentally, I also took a quick look at OBJX. I haven't had time to fully review their product line, but it seems they sold off their best product to Microsoft, and now rely on engineering fees for future revenue. I would have felt better about them if they had kept the rights, as opposed to becoming an engineering arm for Microsoft. Would seem Mr. Gates got the better of this deal. Don't take this to mean that I have totally discounted OBJX, as I'm no expert on their product. I have however, looked into the Iomega Hipzip, and unless they enhance this product, it won't make it at it's current price. Good luck.
Orygun, strictly in my opinion, Hy Tek is but one smallish distributor for Hango's products. I wouldn't be at all surprised if larger (billion + market cap) entities manage to get jukeboxes on store shelves before Hy Tek fullfills their first on-line order. Hy Tek does provide a convenient test bed for gauging market reaction to a new product as far as price point, specifications, etc. I doubt, however, that they have the resources to execute a nationwide promotion and distribution effort. Firms with better connections to mass market retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, etc will, again in my opinion, be fighting it out for the right to introduce a Treo type product.
