HP, Fujitsu, Lenovo and Sony have launched sub-Rs 70,000 notebooks.
http://www.business-standard.com/iceworld/storypage.php?leftnm=8&subLeft=7&chklogin=N&au...
I find this passage very telling on how big the TPM market is going to get, and by the way, this is the first time I have seen this in any review.......
"......but lack of a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip (added level of security) and Active Protection (protects the hard disk drive from jerks) is disappointing. ThinkPads have both the features, which is why they are still slotted above any other business laptop. "
Apple Computers made a dynamic entry into the notebooks’ market with Intel processors, prompting PC/notebook vendors to make their products even more visible. The best way to do so is launch a new product in the market and trumpet the fact. Hewlett-Packard (HP), Fujitsu, Lenovo and even Sony have launched notebooks in the sub-Rs 70,000 bracket to battle Apple. HP India has launched the HP Pavilion dv2025TU notebook that’s decked up with HP’s Imprint Finish technology (gives the machine a feminine look). Pioneering the use of Imprint technology for notebook design, HP has managed to get the looks right – almost endearing.
The machine also features the ‘capacitive’ touch technology, a technical jargon for buttons (similar to a touchpad) meant for audio/video launch and volume controls. A slight touch or tap over these backlit media launch buttons facilitate access to the entertainment mode. At Rs 58,000, the Pavilion dv2025TU is not a costly affair if you consider its features that are skewed towards an entertainment centre. Hence, the best part is its QuickPlay Direct (that lets you access DVDs and music without booting up), a 14-inch WXGA wide screen, a hard drive that can be expanded up to 120 GB, 1.3 mega pixel integrated webcam and a tiny remote control which is quite handy while running multimedia applications.
Nifty features
HP delivered a far superior sound output than Lenovo 3000 N100 qualified at best as a ‘squeal effect’ while playing music/videos. But then it’s not an entertainment notebook – it really cannot be. Lenovo shares the same screen size as HP Pavillion, but makes a better impression with its processing power (Intel’s core duo processor at work here). Lenovo’s N100 looks as if crafted to simplify operating a Windows PC since it has automated many security and maintenance tasks through a suite of productivity tools – Lenovo Care. These tools (skimmed version of ThinkVantage) help alleviate the need for a dedicated IT helpdesk by offering a central location for essential PC tasks such as diagnosing and recovering, managing wireless connections, as well as keeping on top of critical updates and drivers.
The inclusion of a fingerprint reader and integrated web camera for communication are plusses for any business user, but lack of a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip (added level of security) and Active Protection (protects the hard disk drive from jerks) is disappointing. ThinkPads have both the features, which is why they are still slotted above any other business laptop. N100 incorporates a 4-in-1 multi-card reader for downloading digital pictures from multiple types of memory cards, four USB ports (all side mounted), 4-pin FireWire and S-Video port. Having said that, N100 might not set the market on fire but it sure has an attractive price tag of Rs 58,700 (plus taxes).
Plain expectations
On the other hand, Fujitsu’s LifeBook series of notebooks seem to take a much more traditional approach when it comes to design. Rather than fixed drives and widescreen displays, LifeBook C1320 (Rs 42,990), S2110 (Rs 62,990) and S6240 (Rs 82,000 – another variant with DVD writer is available at Rs 93,000) are a bunch of modular looking notebooks.
The S6240 is powered by the Intel Pentium M 750 (1.86 GHz) processor – a norm in most thin and light systems but a 60 GB hard drive seems a bit below average. A 13.3-inch LCD screen does allocate a very compact form factor, the dimensions and weight (293 x 236.5 x 0.5 mm & 1.65kg) barely push the machine past the ultraportable size. Seems like portability was the focus for Fujitsu, so do not use the system for much 3D graphics as it will only leave you disappointed.
While running the S2110, it was noticeable that the underside of the chassis got really warm and it can surely be no coincidence that this region has a thin layer of furry material that can only be to prevent thermal (heating) problems. Fujitsu LifeBook S2110 runs on a 64 bit AMD Turion mobile processor that comfortably runs up to three hours (with Wi-Fi on).
Ideal mate
An ideal Lifebook could be a 64 bit processor, with an outstanding battery life, highly-capable gaming graphics card that emits minimal heat. The S2110 comes a tad closer but not quite there on the graphics part. These aluminium framed Lifebooks are not the cheapest or lightest in their class, but perhaps make a good choice for business and corporate road warriors who demand longevity and a steady performance while away from the office. Battery run, in the above mentioned notebooks, averaged around three to four hours (with Wi-Fi on) with the exception of Fujitsu Lifebook C6240 running a straight 4.5 hours before giving up. The only thing common between Apple and other vendors seems like the Intel platform, since each one has a different lullaby for its consumers.
APPLE/TPM's for Barge.........
http://www.couriermail.news.com.au/story/0,20797,19786150-8362,00.html
from the last paragraph
"Apple could use TPM to lock its operating system to Macs only."
WHEN is an eMac not an eMac? When it's an iMac, according to Apple.
The Mac maker last week introduced a low-end version of its flat-panel iMac to replace the ageing eMac all-in-one.
Like the eMac initially, the new iMac will be available only to students and educators. The move comes as no surprise, as the CRT-based eMac has been conspicuously absent from Apple's Intel transition plans and Apple has stated its desire to move towards more space-efficient and environmentally friendly LCD displays.
Apple breaking free of bulky CRT monitors for the first time in its 30-year history also means the end of the iconic bubble-shaped form factor introduced with the original iMac in 1998.
The iMac switched to a flat-panel LCD display with the "desk-lamp" design in 2002, and then the "computer in a screen" in 2004, but the eMac had retained the CRT monitor and hence the bubble shape.
The new education iMac is a cut-down version of the existing 17in iMac, with Combo drive rather than dual-layer SuperDrive, half the hard disk capacity (80Gb), and lacking a dedicated graphics processor or built-in Bluetooth.
While the education iMac retains the built-in iSight camera with Photo Booth and iChat software, iLife '06 suite and Front Row media centre interface, the infra-red remote control is an optional extra.
Customers will find the $1428 price-tag a nice mid-point between the Mac Mini and regular 17in iMac. However some may consider the extra $570 worth it for the full feature set.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FROM iMac to spyMac: The recent Mac OS X 10.4.7 system software update caused ructions among users when it was revealed that one of the new "features" involves the operating system contacting the Apple mothership at regular intervals.
The OS "phones home" every eight hours (or whenever connected to the internet) to verify that the user's Dashboard widgets match those hosted on Apple's site.
The function is designed to guard against malicious code, but it raised privacy concerns because it was less than fully documented.
Apple has now reassured users that no personal information is gathered.
A similar issue arose earlier this year when Apple introduced the iTunes MiniStore, which made recommendations of songs based on the user's currently playing song.
Privacy concerns prompted Apple to make the feature's "off" switch more prominent.
And Microsoft has recently come under fire for its Windows Genuine Advantage service, which checks that a user's copy of Windows is authorised before allowing software updates and other online services.
It also has been confirmed that the next generation of Intel processors, Core 2 Duo, will feature the Trusted Platform Module, which protects personal data from hackers.
Since the Mac's move to Intel has resulted in Mac OS X being hacked to run on common PCs, Apple could use TPM to lock its operating system to Macs only.

Comodo in the news.........
http://home.nestor.minsk.by/computers/news/2006/07/1402.html
ARX Signs Agreement with Comodo
Algorithmic Research (ARX) and Comodo have signed an agreement to offer Comodo's Web Trusted certificates for use with CoSign Electronic Signatures.
CoSign's use of Comodo's Web Trusted certificates will enable third-party users to verify documents signed by CoSign's standard digital signatures within applications such as Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat, without having to download or install any additional software components or certificates which is typical for other electronic signature solutions.
An advantage of using a Standard PKI-based signature is that when applying a standard signature to a document, for example a PDF document, the signature is embedded in the document. This means the signature travels together with the document when it is sent to another user.
The one piece of the puzzle that is normally missing is that the ability to verify the signature requires the "root certificate" from the organization that applied the signature. The issuing of the Comodo certificates will be done completely transparently to the organization. According to Aharoni, it would work between the CoSign device and the Comodo CA and will be a standard feature of the future release of CoSign Version 4.

I wonder if Gateway is moving TPM machines here..
Found this oldie again
Gateway wins its biggest ever govt deal
Saturday July 2,2005 11:51 am ET
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - News) on Friday said it had been selected as a primary supplier of personal computers for the State of California in a deal that amounts to Gateway's biggest-ever government contract.
The Irvine, California-based company has been chosen to act as one of two approved suppliers for desktop and notebook computers as well as exclusive vendor of PC displays under the California Strategic Sourcing Initiative (CSSI).
The state technology buying plan has a computer purchasing budget estimated at around $250 million over the next three to four years, Gateway spokeswoman Lisa Emard said.
"We expect to get a substantial portion of this business," Emard said.
Lenovo Group (HKSE:0992.HK - News) of China, which in May acquired the PC business of International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - News), was named as a second source of notebook PCs with its "Think" brand of products.
Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - News) of Palo Alto, California will act as a second supplier of desktops, a Gateway spokeswoman said. Gateway was named the exclusive supplier of PC displays.
Starting July 1, Gateway has won what is known in the industry as a "hunting license" to win business from California state government departments looking to buy PCs or monitors.
The deal is a two-year agreement and has an option to be extended for three additional one-year terms, Gateway said.
Consolidated purchasing of computer hardware is part of a bid by the budget-strapped state to slash costs.
A spokesman for the State of California was not immediately available to comment.
The contract win is part of a push by Gateway beyond its base business as a supplier of computer products through major retail outlets. Chief executive Wayne Inouye has made what his company calls the professional market -- government, education and mid-sized businesses -- a major growth target this year.
Rooster something struck me about this article and it was parsed by another poster as well
Joseph Broghamer, who works on authentication technologies in the Homeland Security Department’s CIO office, probed Microsoft officials on whether BitLocker would interoperate with the Personal Identity Veri- fication II cards that DHS and other agencies must roll out this year in compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive- 12. Arnold said BitLocker could not be used with PIV cards because BitLocker keys were stored on TPM chips.
I seem to recall when MSFT first discussed the upcoming release of Vista/Longhorn there was talk about a machine needing the sticker certifying this was a Vista compliant machine and that also meant a TPM inside. Then there were all the anti-TPM and privacy arguements a mong others that came out and I seem to remember a softening or a rebuking of this certification sticker coming from either MSFT or a spokesperson type. Those following the space debunked the release and rightly stated the TPM would still be needed. And then I saw this quote from the article
"BitLocker could not be used with PIV cards because BitLocker keys were stored on TPM chips."
The feature that MSFT is touting on the new system BitLocker needs it's keys stored on the TPM Interesting......
If we go to MSFT page here
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/library/c61f2a12-8ae6-4957-b031-97b4d762cf31.mspx
you get an overview where we find this
BitLocker has two TPM modes:
• TPM-only. This is transparent to the user, and the user logon experience is unchanged. However, if the TPM is missing or changed, BitLocker will enter recovery mode, and you will need a recovery key or password to regain access to the data.
• Startup key. The user will need a startup key to log on to the computer. A startup key can either be physical (USB flash drive with a machine-readable key written to it) or personal (a PIN set by the user).
BitLocker also has a mode for non-TPM systems:
• USB Flash Drive key. The user inserts a USB flash drive in the computer before turning it on. The key stored on the flash drive unlocks the computer.
Is the Homeland Security guy misinformed-perhaps
Is MSFT placate the anti TPM folks
Or is there some truth to what both say in the grey areas ............

Hacker may have netted USDA's Johanns ID data
Since the "chiefs" are now getting their information compromised along with the "indians" maybe the widespread reality of the need begins to sink in at a fast rate
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns and other top Agriculture Department officials are on the list of 26,000 people whose personal information may have been stolen by a computer hacker, USDA said on Friday.
At risk are their social security numbers, the agency said. The numbers could be used to fraudulently gain access to credit cards and other financial transactions.
Two press aides confirmed that data on Johanns and USDA's top-tier policymakers were in the database that was breached. One of them said all Washington-area USDA employees and contractors were affected.
USDA has around 15,000 workers on its Washington payroll. Officials were unable to say how far back the records went to reach 26,000 names.
Deputy Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner said the incident did not involve material used in USDA reports on crop and livestock output.
USDA said it will offer one year of free credit-monitoring services to the current and former employees and contractors affected by the computer breach, which occurred early this month.

Being just a shareholder means not being privvy to all the juicy stuff that could be going on underneath the surface. The best one in our position can do is try to glean as much information as we can and make informed decision. That being said, this cannot be dissected or spun in any other way. This stinks. Someone else said summed it up about being livid with a heading into the weekend release. True that, almost an act of cowardice by a management unwilling to face a very sympathetic and long leash giving shareholder base. I think about all this is going to accomplish is eradicating the blase attitude many have had here on some of the actions of those in Lee.
Wow, I am still kind of reeling from this. This can't be good for the shareprice from here on out, as if this stock needed more uncertainty added into the mix. If you are of the school of thought-and how can you not given the number of 8K's and other PR's that have been released that have not budged the price- that $$$$'s are the only thing that will support and raise the shareprice, that we do not have any coming on the horizon. Even if they chose the delisting route the move to the OTC IMO would have no bearing on the companies ability to raise funds if they had a guarenteed revenue stream from which to count on. And if they knew the afore mentioned revenue stream was on the horizon they should have the option to incur some debt instead of reversing. I can see no other arguement to disprove this. To improve shareholder value is just plain bogus. The company knows damn well how supportive their shareholder base has been and those that get it, get it-they don't need to be placated by some bogus puffed up share price.
From today's release "Wave's board has determined that a reverse stock split represents the most direct action that Wave can take to address its goal of maintaining its listing on the Nasdaq National Market and has recommended that Wave's stockholders vote in favor of the proposal. The board and management believe that continued listing on the Nasdaq National Market is in the best interests of the Company and its stockholders and puts Wave in the best position to implement its business plan. If a reverse stock split is approved by the shareholders at the meeting, Wave's board of directors will determine whether a reverse stock split remains in the best interests of the company and, if so, the ratio at which the reverse stock split will be effected (either 1:2, 1:3 or 1:4)."
I don't like the fact that the Board reserves the right to choose the effective split rate. You have to believe that all other options have been tapped out. The bottom line for me remains that the reveune stream is still a ways out. This IMO is a grave sign coming from Lee. I don't like it and won't vote for it. If I had bought any in the last few weeks or held huge blocks of shares like many here, you must feel like you've been blind sided. And why not there is a good possibility half or more of your shares will be gone. With no way to guarentee the price stays over a dollar. The only thing I see happening here after the split is the price comes back to where we are now as many long timers throw in the towel. And if this goes down who can blame them. Longtimers have been through so much in this stock I couldn't imagine having to face that decision with as much invested as some have. Good luck to us all, we just entered some really choppy waters.
Dave
Prediction for next week........
People are testy again.
I don't get it. This is a long way from over. We still don't have a contract with a hard and fast revenue number attached to it. We have seen the carrot but not the cart. Yet some here are acting like this is over. Wave has put themselves in the best position they can possibly be. They have done everything that they thought was needed to do-much to the chagrin of many in Waveland, to get themselves into this position. Yet even as near as last week there was talk of not needing anymore dilution. Now we have another offering. Grumbling over the proxy about shares. We get a little movement and people act like we have ignition. The act like we are going to have a revenue bomb dropped on us at the CC, an unknown revenue figure mystically appears.
I don't think the company or whomever it is they are going to announce revenue generating deal with would like anything better than to get this news out to validate what is happening in this space. Wave would surely love this. Don't think that DELL or Gateway wouldn't enjoy the validation this would bring them for being early to the game either.
For as long as some have been invested here, I've got to agree with Eamon and others that some of you really don't get what you've invested in here. And it's compounded by the huge amount of equity some of you hold. Not everybody is going to be on the same page, not everybody loves this company or it's technology. Not everybody loves Bonds, but he still hits it out of the park. Not everything on these boards is gospel, not everybody is posting to manipulate the stockprice for a low buy in or shorting. These boards don't hold that much sway. The same poster's seem to float between the boards under aliases. The Yahoo board is nothing more than a virtual pissing contest. They monitor this board and post stuff there. Don't think anybody is paying any attention there other than those who want to keep engaging in this decade long turf war. I know people who have looked at the yahoo board when they went checking Wave out and said it was the most unreadable board they had every come across. The monkeys amuse themslves over there. Lots of the public boards are filled with nothing but spam which leads us to the private boards. These boards serve a purpose for smaller companies bcause where else would we find everything relevant in one place. I certainly would not need a message board if I held shares in MSFT. They also serve the purpose of confirmation, as in I'm not the only one who thinks this company is on the right track, we all like confirmation. It's when you mix the uncertainty with a large financial stake that seems to still permeate some of the posts here.
Realize the risks are all still here, this is far from a done deal. Also realize, DELL, Gateway, Intel, Seagate, Broadcomm, Atmel, etc, etc, etc,....are not going away. Wave has aligned themselves with the top companies in computing. They have commited to Wave. We just need the marketplace to commit to the product. The manufacturer's have, but they still have no real handle on the demand, hence the wording in the contracts Wave has already received. That changes when the demand is tangible. The marketplace has yet to commit, that's the only unknown left. If the marketplace embraces the product, Wave has a license to print money. These giants have already comitted to Wave, and when/if the marketplace embraces these trusted computing products, these business relationships will grow exponentially from that point on. We just need to arrive there. When that happens is anybody's guess.

We'll know something in about 10 hours. I'll be interested to see how it trades if there is no Intel in the well, so to speak tomorrow. Something was driving that action Friday, not business as usual. Hopefully Wave turned a corner last week. Here's to a number left of the decimal place.
Dave
Whatever it was, you can certainly tell by the volume on the Wahoo board that it ain't been a good week for some folks over there. The higher lows and the stabillity shown the past few days bode well. Look, most longs have long been loaded up. If they hadn't,they were buying in the .60's, not here. The long holders don't need to see this strength to be convinced to buy. Any new individual money wanting to come in is going to wait to see how the delisting shakes out. Definetely accumulation of some sort going on.

Should be an interesting week
News follows volume

Catching the bottom at .61 last week is looking pretty good right now.

TPM 1.2 in Fujitsu tablet PC
http://www.internetnews.com/ent-news/article.php/3599891
Fujitsu Resurrects The Sub-Notebook
By David Needle
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Fujitsu previewed a new notebook line, the LifeBook Q Series, which sports a larger display and other features the company says is a breakthrough for portable computers in its class.
So-called sub-notebook portables have proved to be a more of a niche product than their makers had hoped.
"The category has done badly because the products have been too compromised," Roger Kay, analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates, told internetnews.com. "But now we're seeing technology advances to make them more usable."
The Q Series, targeted at executives, features a sleek black design and a 12.1-inch display and is only three-quarter-inch thickness when closed.
The unit runs for about an hour and a half on its internal three-cell battery. An optional six-cell battery, which adds to the system's weight, as well as a docking station, are also available.
"If you look at the industry and the popularity of products like the iPod and the Razr phones, things are getting more stylish, so why shouldn't PCs be?" asked Paul Moore, senior director of mobile product marketing at Fujitsu Computer Systems. "This is like executive jewelry."
The LifeBook Q2010.
Source: Fujitsu
The first notebook in the series, the LifeBook Q2010, is powered by Intel's new Core Solo processor and includes an 80GB hard drive.
The Q Series will be available in six weeks. Fujitsu said it has not set final pricing on the 2.2-pound notebook, although about $2,000 might be a reasonable guess as company officials made a point of saying it wouldn't be priced as low as $999 or as high as $3,000.
In addition to today's Windows XP, Fujitsu said the Q2010 will run Microsoft's Vista OS when it becomes available.
Other features include integrated Wi-Fi wireless LAN 802.11abg with VoIP capabilities and integrated Bluetooth v2.0 for data synchronization with different devices. And the docking station includes an integrated dual-layer DVD burner.
Security features include Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 and a built-in biometric fingerprint sensor for added security and more efficient password management.
The Q Series is also quieter than traditional notebooks as it doesn't need or include a fan for cooling.
Fujitsu trails U.S. notebook market leaders such as Toshiba, Dell and HP, but is looking to make bigger inroads with the Q Series, as well as its mainstream E Series, which has new models, and its T Series tablet computer line.
Aircraft manufacturer Boeing buys Dell for its notebooks, but was an early convert to Fujitsu's tablet computers two years ago.
"With tablet PCs there's less of a wall, and you can write silently with a stylus," said John Ellison, product manager for tablet and rugged PCs at Boeing. "It's less obstructive."

I had the fortune of catching the absolute bottom yesterday, and just missed it today. Three purchases in the past month, something I haven't done since the pre Intel announced days of '03. My position has doubled and I left some powder in case the delisting goes through. These past few months have validated for me that this company will be a player in this space, a major player. The BRCM announcement sealed the deal for me. The reach they have into the broad array of technologies where they are THE major player can not be under estimated. That they even looked towards Wave when they already had an established foray into the TPM market with Infineon speaks volumes. Volumes.

Lenovo, Best Buy Announce Partnership
By MARGARET LILLARD, Associated Press Writer
Lenovo and Best Buy are aiming for a larger share of the small- and medium-sized business audience, announcing a partnership Tuesday to sell its notebook and desktop computers at Best Buy's business-oriented stores.
Chinese computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd. will market its ThinkPad notebooks, ThinkCentre desktops and new line of Lenovo brand 3000 PCs — as well as other Lenovo products — at 135 Best Buy for Business stores and through Best Buy Co. Inc.'s Internet and telephone order services.
The Best Buy For Business locations are specialized departments within some of the chain's nearly 750 stores nationwide. They serve small- and medium-size companies with specialized technology, installation and support.
Scott Smith, president of Lenovo Americas, said the partnership will help the world's third-largest computer maker "reach an increasing number of users who are turning to in-store experts for their small business IT needs."
In February, Lenovo Group introduced its first Lenovo-branded computers to be sold outside its home base of China. It included two lines of desktop computers, starting at $349, and a laptop line that starts at $599.
The series, targeted at small businesses and consumers, is Lenovo's first brand foray in the United States and other countries since it completed its purchase of IBM Corp.'s ailing PC business last May.
Tuesday's announcement marks the return of Lenovo to retail sales in the United States.
A decision by IBM's personal computing division to abandon that market in 1999 ultimately hurt the company as private consumers began to account for more and more sales.
"They really lost a lot of visibility, because there was really no place you could go to see a ThinkPad after that," according to Roger Kay, with the Massachusetts research firm Endpoint Technologies Associates.
Lenovo and Minneapolis-based Best Buy noted that research firm IDC is projecting an increase in sales to U.S. companies with fewer than 100 employees.
Lenovo wants to capture a bigger share of that marketplace, where it currently ranks behind Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co.
In the fourth quarter of 2005, Lenovo had a 7.2 percent market share, compared with Dell's 17.2 percent and HP's 15.7 percent, according to IDC.
While the partnership between Lenovo and Best Buy targets the business market, the placement of sales centers within branches of the nation's biggest electronics chain can also help Lenovo build its identity with private consumers.
"There's nothing to prevent a consumer from actually buying one," Kay said. "It really is setting up Lenovo to sell to consumers at some point. ... They could turn on the consumer version of this just by turning a spigot."
Lenovo moved its headquarters from Beijing to Purchase, N.Y., last year and is currently moving again to Morrisville, outside Raleigh.
Best Buy's new relationship could bode well for its future expansion. The company announced last month that it would open its first test store in China within a year, marking its first retail foray into a country where it already has three offices for buying goods.
"This could become a fruitful partnership and the shoe could be sort of on the other foot in China, where Lenovo could sort of play host to Best Buy," Kay said. "Lenovo's relationships in China shouldn't be discounted — they're extremely strong, and they could help Best Buy decrease the amount of time it takes to establish itself there."

The upfront money will serve 2 purposes. I think you may be right about bargaining the price down. What this will allow them to do is attach a solid real revenue figure prior to the end of a quarter. This also gives solid leverage with the NAZ to forgo delisting IMO. This is a stellar stellar solid deal. I would imagine we see a rev figure sooner than later and I think as this gets digested, given the vol today, we will get the price up enough to exercise the warrants at both price levels and I think we will probably see the price north of a buck before May is finished.

More Vista Security Details Emerge, But Will Enterprises Bite?
The next-generation Microsoft operating system packs needed security features, but the adoption forecast for Windows-weary enterprises is cloudy.
by Mathew Schwartz
http://www.esj.com/security/print.aspx?editorialsId=1661
4/4/2006
When will we see mass Windows Vista adoption, and will it solve lingering Windows security problems?
The news that Microsoft will again delay shipping its next-generation Windows Vista operating system (OS) means the OS, with its bevy of security, networking, user-interface, and other promised enhancements, still won’t hit the market for several months. Of course, a release date (late 2006 for businesses, early 2007 for consumers) is one thing; implementing a new OS is another.
When might enterprises finish actually migrating to Vista? The simple answer, according to current reports, is that by the first half of 2008, most enterprises still won’t have standardized on Vista, and will forestall migration until Vista’s benefits are clearly articulated and validated.
In fact, according to a global survey of 4,080 business and IT professionals’ year-one intentions for Vista conducted by FreeForm Dynamics and interpreted in conjunction with analyst firm Macehiter Ward-Dutton (MWD), only 12 percent of companies anticipate adopting Vista within a year of its widespread debut. Those results are consistent across all geographic regions, except for a greater professed interest by Scandinavian companies in “probably” adopting Vista in its first year.
“The IT professional community regards the prospect of upgrading to Windows Vista as being more of a chore than an opportunity,” notes FreeForm Dynamics and MWD in their survey report. “The assumption by most is that adoption is inevitable, but there is no need to rush. In fact, the logic commonly heard is that the longer you wait, the lower the risk and pain will be.”
Whatever IT managers might say, senior managers often dictate OS migration timetables. Yet according to the survey, migration attitudes are consistent regardless of respondents’ seniority. One explanation, perhaps, is everyone already has a Vista upgrade timetable in place, even if it isn’t imminent. A more likely explanation, however, is “the need for Vista is currently not well recognized at either the business or technology level,” the report's authors opine.
Still, that may just reflect Vista’s lack of exposure, since “Vista-related media coverage and discussion to date has largely taken place within IT industry circles,” notes the report. Can a PR blitz to coax business users toward Vista be far away?
Resisting Vista
While the survey didn’t specifically ask respondents about their perceived barriers to Vista adoption, analysis of 2,600 responses highlights the roadblocks respondents perceive: questionable cost or benefit (for half of respondents), software and hardware compatibility questions (45 percent), and security and stability worries (35 percent).
Many respondents note they’re still using Windows 2000, or just finished a Windows XP rollout, and don’t plan to upgrade again anytime soon. Others worry about the lag between Vista rollout and needed applications—built in-house or otherwise—becoming compatible.
To avoid any innate Vista security problems, many respondents say they’ll delay Vista adoption pending at least the first major fix, the Service Pack 1 update. As one survey respondent wrote, “As with any newly released operating system, and especially with Microsoft, I’d prefer to have the bleeding-edge punters be the meat-shield for the security holes and malware that is sure to follow the Vista launch.”
Such caution is widespread and no doubt based on companies’ actual Windows 2000 and Windows XP upgrade experiences, notes the report. “Early movers often suffered an unforgettable degree of pain and frustration.”
Weighing Features versus Upgrade Challenges
What exactly does Vista promise? In Forrester’s recent “Windows Vista Enterprise: What’s In It For You?” research report, analysts Simon Yates and David Friedlander profile the extent of current knowledge about Vista’s features through the fourth build of Vista released to Microsoft’s Community Technology Preview (CTP) program. As they note, “Earlier CTP releases gave users a first look only at the interface features of Windows Vista, such as Avalon, but now the enterprise CTP build comes with all of the bells and whistles that will matter for a complete evaluation.”
On the security front, Vista features include a hardened OS, which should forestall many current types of attacks. “In Windows XP, many users routinely access their systems as administrators—either for convenience or because some applications require elevated privileges to run,” note the analysts. “In Windows Vista, User Account Control allows users to run in standard user mode most of the time without preventing them from doing basic tasks like changing power management settings or connecting to wireless networks. When temporary elevated privileges are needed, explicit consent is requested and authenticated by password.”
Another interesting Vista security feature, they note, is more secure handling of passwords and cryptographic keys. “With the arrival of Trusted Platform Module chips, Windows Vista BitLocker drive encryption can now store encryption keys and passwords on a dedicated TPM chip instead of software files that can be hacked or copied.”
According to MWD, other useful Vista features include improved security management; the ability to create single application and image builds that work across different types of hardware, languages, and user types; and legacy application support via virtualization.
Particularly for larger organizations, however, fully realizing Vista’s security and management benefits will require a wholesale—and completed—Vista migration. Otherwise, organizations must still maintain multiple images for different PC models and versions of Windows. That’s why small and medium-size organizations will likely see quicker Vista adoption, simply because PC vendors will push the OS into organizations with every new PC purchase.
By contrast, expect careful deliberation in the enterprise realm, especially by companies currently standardized on Windows XP. As Forrester’s Yates and Friedlander note, “Firms that are already heavily invested in the current generation of Microsoft infrastructure will find it easiest to migrate but may also realize fewer benefits.”
That’s why, as the FreeForm Dyamics and MWD report notes, “Windows Vista is currently regarded as just another Windows release within IT professional circles,” and not a security, stability, or any other type of silver bullet. Accordingly, Vista adoption likely won’t be any more rapid than Windows 2000 or Windows XP adoption.
Vista: Show Me the Security
The only caveat to that adoption forecast is if Microsoft preemptively and effectively makes the case for Vista being more than just another Windows release. To do that, say FreeForm Dynamics and MWD, Microsoft must do three things: defuse many enterprise concerns by obtaining third-party verification of Vista’s security and stability; engender a fast port of applications by the vendor community; and produce accurate (and trusted) benchmarks of the hardware needed to run Vista.
If such results are produced (and cast Vista in a good light), the report notes companies might adopt the OS more rapidly. “Based on past experiences, however, Microsoft and Vista are likely to be regarded as guilty until proven innocent on such matters.”

HP, RSA Data Security and Wave Systems To Enable
Enhanced Security For E-Mail and Internet Transactions
Trusted-client Technology Secures Users’ Digital Identities
in Hardware for PCs and Set-top Boxes
San Jose, Calif., RSA Conference, January 20, 1999 -- Hewlett-Packard Company, RSA Data Security, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Security Dynamics Technologies, Inc. and Wave Systems Corp. today announced technology to embed digital identities in hack-resistant hardware on PCs and set-top boxes. This new technology, based on HP and Wave’s "trusted-client" architecture, will give users significantly higher levels of security than software-only solutions for e-mail messaging and Internet transactions.
RSA Data Security will support Wave Systems’ EMBASSY E-Commerce System implementation of the trusted client architecture with its industry-leading BSAFE family of security-protocol toolkits. EMBASSY securely stores users’ identities in hack-resistant hardware embedded in the client device. This new solution integrates a critical new function that verifies the electronic identities of the sender and the receiver in each transaction or message, protecting against stolen identities. With current security solutions, digital identities are stored on the hard disk, which leaves them vulnerable to hacker attacks.
The trusted-client system was introduced by HP and Wave Systems last October. It is an open, programmable hardware- and software-based device that creates an exportable, secure and trusted environment within the PC. Wave’s EMBASSY E-Commerce System is the first implementation of the trusted-client technology and will be included on motherboard, peripheral and set-top box chip sets due out this year from leading PC component suppliers IGST, ITE and Standard MicroSystems (SMSC).
The combination of RSA’s applications and libraries, HP’s VerSecure Security Management Framework and Wave’s EMBASSY E-Commerce System provides the strongest-possible security for worldwide delivery of messaging and Internet transactions. EMBASSY, enabled by HP’s VerSecure, will permit users and system OEMs to securely store a unique secure identity in the form of digital certificates. The identity can be leveraged by RSA tools such as RSA’s BSAFE S/MIME-C for messaging and BSAFE SSL-C+ for secured and authenticated network transactions. VerSecure’s special encryption-management capabilities provide access to the strongest allowable encryption within the EMBASSY for worldwide exportability, limited only by local laws.
"While the global networks have quickly leveraged Internet technologies to build converged transport networks, the security approaches between industries and platforms remain fragmented and incomplete," said Al Sisto, chief operating officer, RSA. "Our goal is to provide application developers and service providers in both the Internet and mass-media industries with a common set of functions and tools for highly secure messaging and transactions that can be implemented across many platforms, and the EMBASSY is a key element of that solution."
"Strong security is a prerequisite for value exchange in the digital world," said Steven Sprague, Wave Systems president. "RSA’s support of the trusted-client architecture strengthens a universal solution for secured digital identification, paving the way for trusted Internet commerce and services such as secure e-mail. Industry-wide support for the trusted-client will significantly enhance security for businesses and consumers."
"Security is a complex global issue, with frequent changes on a country-by-country basis," said Doug McGowan, head of HP’s VerSecure program. "By creating a solution that is programmable and building an infrastructure to control a device’s security characteristics based on local regulations, we have created an optimal security solution for devices connected to worldwide networks. Our alliance with RSA and Wave Systems will extend that security solution to many of the applications people use today and will use in the future."

Eamon, I look at this as a major positive for Wave. By listing the EMBASSY name I think we are seeing the branding.
Given the discussions that we have had here about one company being perceived as controlling the direction security will take in this space I think it is only logical that they would try and put a branmd name out in the fore instead of a company and a brand. i think we may see HP Embassy, Dell Embassy, IBM embassy. Embassy could be a generic term that people may equate with security in the PC and mobile space Embassy = Security. If it's got Embassy inside it's secure. We know it's Wave but the public could care less. SKS has said the public will want it to be seemless and running in the background. Brandnaming Embassy instead Wave could be the tack we may see being taken. I think this is a beautiful thing. Feel the ubiquity.

Go-Kite expectations.............
I was going to respond to a post earlier this morning but I can do it here. Many people here seem to think that a Wave mention on the new DELL campaign will be the elixir this company needs. I don't believe so. Look the DD here is as good as it gets. In spite of this, there are still wild pie in the sky unreachable expectations that continue to abound. To those invested in Wave a mention would be further validation that we are in the right place at the right time. To Joe consumer, the mention of Wave would probably be greeted with.................................................................. -insert crickets chirping here. The public has no idea who Wave is, what product they offer and what they do. It will continue to be that way until the revenues come in. When the revenues come in, the coverage and institutional buying will commence. If it goes the way many here have projected Wave will be in millions of machines and applications by that time with millions of other machines yet to enter the marketplace. As the revenues coninue to flow, the stories in print will follow and the investors will then come in. It would not surprise me in the least if most stockholders here that buy and sell this stock are the same as those that have been doing the same over the last 6 years. The longs continue to buy, their faith unshaken, the shorts still bash and pop. When the worm turns, the shorts will join the longest of longs- the game is still making money. We are still a few quarters away from real revenue streaming in. I don't care how many times Wave's name shows up in another PR. It's the revenue that will move this stock going forward, not a ride on Dell's coat tails.
Dave
You don't have to like what happened today. I can't imagine anybody who is long should. The hardiest of souls are picking up shares here-the vaunted "buying opportunity" has arrived. Just like it did the week before and the week before that. Look, if your are long in this stock it doesen't matter what the stock is doing today. Sure it matters if this is the push down the slippery slope that many here, and on the other boards would have you believe. The fact remains that this company has positioned itself well amongest those that will decide how our pc's and the way we compute will be secured. Make no mistake about this, it's already started. The TPM will play THE major role, that is for sure. It isn't sure how this will play out. In the short term Wave needs a revenue producing announcement to stave off a delisting from the NAZ. I am sure this is going to throw some more longs off, and add more virtrol to the bashers.
The fact that remains is that the TPM's are coming. The public still doesn't know it yet. The biggest asset and detriment to the commuity at large here is our perception. What we toss around here on a daily basis, the functionality and all that comes with the TPM that we debate and teach and explain, so that some of us can grasp the workings of, and others still can't quite get paint the truer picture of what Wave and the computing industry is up against. Very few people outside of those folowing these stocks have ever heard of a TPM. More people associate TPM with the "Talking Points Memo" blog than a trusted module I am sure. And then how do you reach the user and procurers that don't or won't use the internet. I have yet to see TPM's get any sort of high profile exposure in the dreaded MSM yet. Sure you see the security aspect being played upon, but what kind of security? It's like a guilt free snack-what replaced the sugar if you don't tell me?
We are in the right space. Security is going to be both guns blazing going forward. TPM seems to be the choice-look at all the models containing them now. There now appear on the first page of specs in the computers they appear on, whereas you had to dig and find them before. It would be nice to control the deployment and time frames and revenues streams and everything that comes with it, but the reality is Wave can not. As investors you have a decision to make. Do you have the stomach to ride this out, has the time frame just beaten you down, did you invest in something you real did not and still don't understand. I have to believe that describe a few here. Being in the right space also describes those here. There aren't a whole lot of companies set up to play in this arena the way Wave has postioned itself. That why if you still believe in the DD others have done and see the market for what it is you can perservere through this drop and even bottom feed here. Good luck to all and maybe even turn away from the boards for a few weeks if it will help you maintain your sanity.
Dave
I just added some more myself and will if we get another dip this afternoon.
Dave
This is not the time for puffery. Steven realizes there are a lot of eyes on Wave today, some of those I am sure brought in by today's Dell presentation. There seemed to be more financial types than individual investor type during the Q and A session This is a tremendous undertaking that has very sweeping implications and I think Steven has obviously become very aware of that. Now is the time to roll up the sleeves and bring it home.
Dave
The drum always beats quietly when it is in the distance. Folks this is where Wave is today. Not as quiet as a few years before and not as loud as the next few will find it. There comes a time when an industry reaches a crossroads. At that crossroads these companies who have arrived have decisions, paths they must choose. Some forge on unimpeeded. Others pause to survey what lies ahead on the untravelled.
This is where the computer industry is today. The great weight that is security, or the lack thereof in the computing world, has set in motion many changes that we see happening before our eyes. What we are seeing today is the rise of TPM as standard in this industry. You want clarifacation? Gateway publicly fired the first shot, and Dell followed it up today across the pond. Some will say it was Dell last year, or Intel prior. I'll stand by my Gateway/Dell scenario because this was the first time in my eyes this was presented to the consumer as a solution that is already installed and ready to go/bundled baby.
Yet on the verge, agony and despair abound. Where is the revenues, what are the numbers etc. etc. etc....
Look, common sense told anyone who wanted to see that the revs. were not going to be flowing in. If they had been, why have another pipe? As far as the numbers go, yes they are important, but the PC push in earnest has yet to begin. These guys are trying to find what the market will be just as much as Wave is trying to find the market. Add to that they are getting pulled in every direction imaginable by any vendor hawking a secure solution touting the advantage of using their product, and then we throw the voice of the "information must be free" sect with the Big Brother tact and that's one hell of a lot of voices being raised. Above all that it seems Wave's is being heard.
TPM's and trusted computing are just catching fire. This alone shows me I have placed my bets in the right sector, we just need to see if we are on the right side of the table. Dell, Gateway, AMD, Intel, Seagate are just to name a few who have aligned themselves with Wave. This is pretty good company anyway you slice it. The public at large is still pretty ignorant as far as security goes in the PC and on-line arenas. They could have put the squeeze on Norton and Macafee and just muddled along. Once they realized all that a TPM and trust suite could provide, the robust solution they could deploy, a substandard solution was no longer an option. I can not believe these giants of industry would even consider Wave an option if they had any belief that they would not be an ongoing concern at this critical juncture here at what is the dawn of the trusted computing era. I just can't see that happening.

LG sweeps Red dot Design Awards
LG Electronics, the global and regional digital leader, has earned major international recognition for its notebook computers.
United Arab Emirates: Sunday, March 12 - 2006
LG's notebook range swept the Red dot Design Awards for 2006, including the prestigious 'Best of the Best' award. LG's T1 Express Dual, S1 Express Dual, and TX Express all received honours for their innovative design.
The Red dot Design Awards rank alongside the iF and IDEA Design Awards for global industry prestige. More than 2,000 products from 40 countries were entered for judging this year including home appliances, office automation-related products, lighting, and car accessories.
LG's T1 Express Dual notebook PC won the 'Best of the Best' award in the product design category. The T1 builds on LG's reputation for leading notebook technology and attractive styling.
The T1's 14.1-inch WXGA widescreen and white keyboard are encased a glossy piano-black exterior, which distinguishes the T1 from conventional notebook PC's. The T1 Express Dual is only 21mm thick, weighs just 1.9kgs, and features Intel's Core Duo Processor, making it the best in its class for power and portability.
Other T1 features include a fingerprint reader, Dual Hexa-Band Antenna and tri-band support, dual-layer Super-Multi DVD recorder, and a 5-in-1 multimedia card slot.
'Receiving a top international design award reflects LG's dedication to innovation and quality - and its growing status globally for premium technology products,' said K.W Kim, President, LG Electronics, Middle East and Africa Operations. 'This achievement will help the LG brand further strengthen its market leadership with products that combine aesthetics with functionality.'
The 15.4-inch widescreen S1 Express Dual notebook also boasts a glossy piano-black design. It sports outstanding multimedia features with Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology, and the latest video (ATI MobilityTM Radeon® X1K series) and audio technology.
It also provides the maximum level of security with an embedded security chip called TPM and a fingerprint reader. The S1 Express Dual notebook PC is expected to set the standard for cutting edge notebook PC design thanks to its Red dot Design Award 2006.
The third Red dot Design Award winner, the TX Express notebook PC is the thinnest and lightest product in the LG notebook family. It weighs only 1.1 kgs, and is just 23 mm thick. The TX Express is also the world's first 'sub-notebook PC' with 'discrete graphics Geforce Go 7300' designed by US graphics supplier NVIDIA.
Kim added: 'LG sold notebooks worth US$53 million in the Middle East and Africa region last year, a 112 per cent increase compared to 2004. We introduced Sonama and Dual Core Chip-set notebook PCs ahead of our competitors. This proved to our customers that LG is well ahead of the competition, not only for product design but also technology. Today, LG consumers demand the highest standard of technology, functionality and design excellence.'
