STOW--- Now why did you have to go and do that. Dang blast it! Now everyone with a pick and shovel and breathing tube is going to be tromping through the woods. I was goin' ta tell ya ta never but never tell nobody, not no how, the where abouts of dat der pool cuz I know where it is and I am aheadin' there right now and I don't want no company, ya heah! (GG)
Benj
>>>...and a partridge in a pear tree?<<< No, but there is a big fat ring-necked dove in that fir tree that would look mighty nice on my dinner plate. Now, where is my sling shot? (G)
Benj
>>>You forgot about the man eating lions<<< Yes, the list was too long to do justice. But now that you mention it there are some resident cougars here. One hangs out at my neighbors pool to drink after a meal of venison. They let their small kids run around wild, suprisingly, claiming that they have built up enough good "karma" to protect the children. Yeah.
How much gold did you get after two weeks dredging? A buddy worked for a gold company in the hills for two years for a stake in the company until one day one partner shot and killed the other partner and took off with all the loot. Hard work which can be deadly at times. But that's the wild west for you.
Benj
I must insitst that those advertising gold in California to cease and desist from this despicable practice. We have enough panhandlers in the streets let alone the creeks and streams, thank you. Why not tell everyone that diamonds too, can be found. But don't forget to tell everyone about the epidemic of rattle snakes here too. I caught six on my property in one day. Wild boars with tusks to shread, menacing bears a-drooling, lusty bulls a-grazing, on the lookout for unwary gold seekers, not to mention fever ridden mosguitoes, lime carying ticks, rabbid skunks, marmotts, and rats just to mention a few of the obstacles to overcome one one's quest for riches here.
But if mlsoft still wants to come, it's OK with me.(GGG)

Joe Stocks---- >>>Their only hope is share price appreciation<<<
Joe, if you bought MSFT in 1998 and sold two years later
( after all, not many say hold stocks forever ) your appreciation would have been around 300%, or $100,000
turned into $300,000. If you had the same investment in
DUK, it would have been worth $111,682 based on today's yield of 5.68% and no stock appreciation in those years.
Which would you prefer? No one is forced to "put up with
not recieving a dime in income from their investments."
They do so for the potential of performance that dwarfs
investing for income.
Lnux---Up 57% to $2.35 on 24x average volume triggered by old news. Three year high around $250. For three months ended 4-26-03 revs were $6,037,000; after tax earnings were -$3,610,000. ROA -44.16%. ROE -73.33%. A real powerhouse.
TJ Parker----Actually, TJ, a year ago Ballmer admitted that Linux WAS cheaper to run and thus abandoned the "fud" in this reguard. He then said that msft would have to concentrate on the value-added side of the equation, what ever that is.
BTW, a friend used to be a portfolio manager for msft. Interesting that you say Bill Gates has some of his loot under Fleck at this time. Do you have any idea of Fleck's performance over the last two years. I don't.
Plexxus---I see that williams got $800 mil financing, letters of credit, etc. Refinancing of companies represents very little assurance of anything IMO, after all, Enron was financed to the bitter end. But good luck in your trade.
pkexxus---You talkin' to me?? (G)
msft did not warn today, they warned a year ago when Ballmer publicly stated that msft had no answer to linux.
I guess they still don't.
augieboo----->> why we should not listen to the news media<< Yes, I for one do not listen to the media nearly as much as I used to and have also cut back on the printed material that I read including that from Forbes, Barrons, New York Times, articles from what's his name, on and on. One does have to keep abreast of things but one does not need to continually clutter the mind with endless theories, opinions, dissertations, or extrapolations, that in many ways serve to do our thinking for us. All IMO.
BTW, My dog says hi.
M_e--- Lol, you mean we now have to be on the lookout for new and improved flying fish oil capsules? Just when you think there is nothing left to worry about....<G>
Phill--- on target. These boards do not reflect general public sentiment, IMO.
Benj
VIP up %5 on good volume to new 52 wk high. My Russian is a bit rusty but I think the cc is going OK.
LG---I'm practicing mine right now. <G>
Thread was a little rough today. Some minor contusions, scrapes and abrasions, ruffled feathers. Did we have a solar flair today? But nothing that a few miracle concoctions and a flying trapeze couldn't fix. Well, off to the salt mines.
Godfrey--- hang loose in the saddle and keep your eye on the horizon. And don't let nobody get your goat, Yah
heah?
MSFT dogging it again? Who posted those rumors? They were dead on. And the loss to Germany...do you suppose it was Ballmers lisp, LG? Actually it was All evident to me a while back observing its price action that troubles were lurking. I call it GA.... gut analysis.
aj---You remind me of a Tom petty song....." And I won't........back down." Good on ya mate.
Pantera---AOL for me represeted some grudge money I felt Case owed me after he helped destroy a small company I had invested in. Did fairly well and sold before they bought Time Warner, a doomed arrangement. Got to hand it to Case though, he was a street fighter.
Benj
Climbing out of the salt mines I see the gold train heading south, right on schedule.
ajtj--- I've read many of your posts during that time and admire the dedication you aply to your craft.
Your response >>> I respectfully disagree<<< to WLD's comment that >>not all TA is the same<< led me to believe that you felt all TA was cut and dried, with little room for interpretation, hence the stagnation question.
I am with you on the FA. I used to be a fan but gradually figured out that the TA or merely observing price/volume action could tell you alot about the behind the scenes problems or positive developements in a company.
These days TA rules but it rules differently for every person.
Benj
>>>I resectfully disagree<<<
ajtj, My broker has been practicing TA for 50 years and looks upon it as a symphony, an art form and I tend to agree with him. The various forms of TA are many things to many people. May I ask you how long you have been practicing TA and why you believe it to be a stagnant form of analysis?
>>wesn civ didn't come to a screeching halt over the savings and loan debacle<<
And it didn't come to a screeching halt when Reagan devalued the dollar by %25 over night either. But the past is the past, isn't it?
MKT_entropy---No, Just covering shorts as ordered I suspect or just trying to help people out of sticky situations. There were very few lemmings going long EBAY 52 I might say. He makes no blanket statements such as "Now is the time to jump in with both feet", but is rather selective in his suggestions. He does believe people were bears for too long, though, recognizing that the trend has been one's friend if one allowed. I have not been as willing toward this "trend" as I wish I had.
Benj
EBAY---My beloved broker told me, advised me to go long EBAY at 52, strictly TA. Today he has ten seconds to telL me his clients are covering all shorts, everything, including EBAY.
Well, yes, that would complete the pattern alright. Thanks.
$340, that is. Where are my glasses!!?
George C--- If the presumed correction commences, would not gold have to hold the %340 area in order to keep the upward trend in tact.
Benj
Captain_Jack--->> The majority of parents have taken away all control from teachers and administrators.<< >>Teachers are not permitted to scold or fail students.<< Vey true statements. No knuckle rapping, of course, and if a confused student believes 2+2 = 5 it = 5. We don't want to give someone a inferiority complex or lower one's self esteem by insisting on the right answer now do we?
But in other ways parents have given astonishing control over curriculum. The most disturbing example that I have heard of recently is that some scools decided that it would be just dandy to teach 7 year olds how to perform safe gay sex. As you said, many parents of the "me generation" are just looking for a baby sitter. They also seem to care less as to what is taught as well.
Muscle Cars? I cut my driving teeth on me dear old Mum's
'69 Buick Wildcat. 430 ci., 360 horses and 475 lb-ft of torque. Poor girl didn't understand what was under the hood and would regularly come home from the store in the state of shock after burning rubber at every stop sign and squeeling around every corner. I didn't mind it's power all that much.
Benj
Beautiful! Heading up to the lake soon to do the houseboat thing with a bunch of old chums. No animals allowed, including children. Only adult animals. >G<
Shasta---That's the part I forgot, they don't drool!! Much snow on the mountain?
Can't spell if I can't find my glasses, now can I.
Godfrey---On and off topic---Sounds logical to me. Interesting about the Roman coins. Loking at my spare change I see lots of copper in the sivler. Or is that nickel or tin that looks like silver?
Was going to tell you about the Leonbergers. Ours came to us at our house on top of this mountain at midnight on new years eve last year. Could not find the owners. Fantastic dog and I've had several. A good Golden was my favorite
until this guy showed up. A very rare breed (only 1000 registered in the US) originating in Leonberg, Germany in the 1800's. The breeder, what's his name, wanted a dog that was good for search and rescue, good disposition, and looked like a lion. He succeeded in spades. He used NewFoundland, Great Pyrenees, Burmese Moountain, a little Bernard and another I forget for the breeding pool. The largest goes to 170 lbs, which is why they nearly went extinct in Europe during the World Wars as nobody could afford to feed them. Luckily ours is only 100lb. A Striking looking, powerful dog with a gentle, trustworthy
disposition but who will also guard the estate. Would highly recommend them if one can find one. A chick magnet as well, for the bachelors out there. Uh oh, was that PC?
>>GG<<
Banj
Lee--- Yah, it's fun to practice the yodelling on a nice hike through the woods. >G<
Benj
Mlsoft--- I assume you meant MSFT would not see 50 pre-split? When they pulled that rediculous split I almost sold the last of my position. Happily I sold 80% of it from 120 down but kept some for "sentimental" reasons. After fifteen years I just couldn't bring myself to totally break off the relationship. Relationships carry baggage, some not so good.>>G<< I have never seen a deperation split work with any stock. Granted. the markets are high and not supported by anything fundamental that I can see but the market is not a logical or rational beast, hence insane rallies materialize. The market ultimately does what logic would dictate but, as I am sure you are fully aware, sometimes it takes months or years.
MSFT's performance lately tells me that there is something wrong with the company specifically, in spite of where the market should or should not be. Others are vastly more rich in valuation. JMO though.
Best, Benj
>>Aim for the stick<< Yes, then keep your left arm straight, head down, nice and easy tempo and the slice, duckhook, blade, top, dropkick or just plain miss the ball. >GG< Just a few of the results that I am going to try to avoid when I "hit the links" today.>G<
Mlsof---This is what I have been thinking. Any ideas as to what the problem is. Linux, economy....?
Benj
Train Guy---You mentioned msft's "slush" fund reguarding Linus. Ballmer was quoted about ten monts ago by Rich Cirillo of VarBusiness as saying; "One issue we have now, a unique competitor, is linux. We haven't figured out how to be lower priced than Linux. For us as a company, we're going through a whole new world of thinking." He then went on to say how their approach would lean more toward the value added side of the company indicating they were backing off trying to discredit Linux's lower cost claims through FUD, etc...which I assume was paid for out of the old "slush." Could you explain the "recent" slush and what they are trying to accomplish with it? I havn't heard.
