The Bird of Prey
Yep, that is exactly how they are described in the code. I see them all the time in two and three story construction. Remember the purpose of Fire sprinklers is to control the spread of the fire until the FD can arrive and put it out. The association has done extensive testing to determine what is required to achieve this goal. The code make no distinction beyond placement of the sprinklers with regards to manufactured joist as you you describe. I am not certain but I believe that the truss must be treated with some type of fire retardant material before installation. That is another code I'll have to look it up.

The Bird of Prey
Can you do anything besides call me names? It is really starting to become monotonous.
I do feel that I have a vastly superior moral and ethical character than you
Be careful, your sociopathic tendencies are showing.
The Bird of Prey
Muell,
1% is currently 18.54 points. In the time this contest has been running I can think of only 2 or three times this rule would have applied. I did say they would get an honorable mention. But I don't think a "win" that was off by 50 points should count towards becoming a weekly winner.
Thank you for your kind support.
The Bird of Prey
Yes, my mother is here at IH. No, she doesn't fight my battles *for* me. She can decide if she wishes to enter into an exchange with anyone she wishes. Yet *your* buddy, who I will add has fought many a battle for *you* choose to insult me by claiming she fought my battles for me. Considering the number of times *your* "friends" have stuck their collective noses into *your* battles, your using this to further excuse CH and therefore justifying your hypocrisy is unbelievably arrogant.
I agree that your exchanges on the COMPX thread were non inflammatory. Perhaps if your *good buddy* had left well enough alone we wouldn't have had this discussion today. A fine friend you have there, left you to clean up his mess.
Quite frankly, though you clearly have a superior opinion of your moral and ethical character, your language and demeaning style belie your true nature.
The Bird of Prey
I'll likely regret this but if no one else wants the job...I'll do it.
If anyone is interested I put up my proposed rules before taking the position. that way if anyone thinks I'm unfair about it they can voice the opinion that I not be installed as moderator.
1. Only those WAG's posted before 9:10am will be considered for a given trading day. This will allow all editing time to expire prior to market open. IH time as logged is the reference.
2. There must be a minimum of 3 points between WAG's. Oldest post has priority.
3. Daily Winner will be determined by closest to the close, within a 1% error range. WAG's outside the 1% range will not be considered a daily winner even if they are closest. In the event that no pick is within 1% of the close the closest WAG will receive an honorable mention.
4. Weekly winner will be determined by the closest WAG for the week, unless there is a multiple winner of the daily contest, in which case the multiple winner will be declared the weekly winner and the closest WAG will get an Honorable mention.
5. These rules may be added to or changed without prior notice.
The Bird of Prey
I'm going to take you seriously (this time -g):
Ah! the dangers we all face! *-)
mass murderer: Multiple homicides in a single event. I've never heard of a minimum number being applied. Examples would be the school shootings, several restaurant incidents and of course WTC.
serial killer: Multiple homicides in multiple events. May be spread over weeks, months or years, often with no apparent rhyme or reason. Not always involving sexual violation and/ or torture. In one very chilling description, Henry Lee Lucas details diverting his buddy Otis Thorpe from killing a drug dealer because they can be tied to the victim through their previous encounters. To help Otis deal with the rage Henry took him out on the highway where, while posing as a couple of guys with car trouble, Otis shot and killed the first Good Samaritan that came along.
sociopath/psychopath: I agree with the psych lit here as well. was looking for a more detailed comparison. Such as, is it possible for a sociopath to function within the law and standards acceptable to society? same for psychopath?
Your turn.
The Bird of Prey
Why are you only asking this of me?
As far as I can tell stiring up trouble is the only thing CH seems capable of.
IMO, I am equally undeserving of a number of profane insults that JXM has hurled in my direction.
I would be glad to ignore them, and I was until CH decided to engage me.
I once offered JXM an opportunity to "bury the hatchet", his response was to publicly ridicule the offer with CH.
They may be your "friends" but they certainly don't shed a flattering light.
The Bird of Prey
Not exactly a story,
But I'll try to explain a few of the phrases used today that had their origins in the Middle Ages.
In certain locales and in qualification and training for tournaments, knight would prepare for the joust by collecting rings suspended on string along the field. When qualifying or in tournaments where the local authority were too squeamish for the real thing, the rings were substituted and a point value was assigned to the different colors of rings. Almost always a single metal ring of brass would be included in the group of rings. The catching or missing of this one ring could be the difference in the match.
Here are some more interesting phrases...
Bread was divided according to status.
Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf,
the family got the middle, and guests got
the top, or the "upper crust".
Lead cups were used to drink ale
or whiskey. The combination would
sometimes knock them out for a couple
of days. Someone walking along the
road would take them for dead and
prepare them for burial. They were laid
out on the kitchen table for a couple of
days and the family would gather around
and eat and drink and wait and see if they
would wake up.
Hence the custom of holding a "wake".
Houses had thatched roofs. Thick straw,
piled high, with no wood underneath. It
was the only place for animals to get warm,
so all the pets - dogs, cats and other small
animals, mice, rats, bugs lived in the roof.
When it rained it became slippery and
sometimes the animals would slip and
fall off the roof. Hence the saying, "It's
raining cats and dogs."
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had
something other than dirt, hence the
saying "dirt poor."
The wealthy had slate floors which would
get slippery in the winter when wet. So they
spread thresh on the floor to help keep their
footing. As the winter wore on they kept
adding more thresh until when you opened
the door it would all start slipping outside.
A piece of wood was placed at the entry
way, hence a "thresh hold".
Sometimes they could obtain pork
and would feel really special when
that happened. When company came
over, they would bring out some bacon
and hang it to show it off. It was a sign
of wealth and that a man could "bring
home the bacon." They would cut off
a little to share with guests and would
all sit around and "chew the fat."
Most people got married in June because
they took their yearly bath in May and were
still smelling pretty good by June. However,
they were starting to smell, so brides carried
a bouquet of flowers to hide the b.o.
The only sweetener available was honey. Honey
was also considered an aphrodisiac. It was
customary for the bride and groom to sprinkle
all of their food with honey for one month or
one cycle of the moon in order to ensure they
would have both the energy and the desire
to "make a baby". This is where the
term "Honeymoon" comes from.
Baths equalled a big tub filled with hot water.
The man of the house had the privilege of the
nice clean water, then all the other sons and
men, then the women and finally the children.
Last of all the babies. By then the water was
so dirty you could actually lose someone in it.
Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out
with the bath water".
The Bird of Prey
Correct!
The Bird of Prey
Sure! Why let simple logic interfere when a perfectly good emotional delivery of invective will suffice?
That is how you *win* isn't it? Batter your opponent with the tawdry and obscene until they walk away in disgust? Then declare your self the *winner* because you spoke last?
Now that's tedious.
The Bird of Prey
TLC abandoned the board some time ago. Needs more time to persue Jenna. My apologies for the current exchange.
The Bird of Prey
Very good!
But it also has a much older reference. Do you know of that one as well?
The Bird of Prey
is CH *anybody*?
If you find it offensive if *anybody* references family in a derogatory manner, then if CH is *anybody* you must find it offensive.
If you do not find it offensive if CH references family in a derogatory fashion then we can only come to one of two conclusions:
1. CH isn't *anybody*.
This opens up a whole myriad of possible tangents. From CH is *nobody* to you are an all powerful being that gets to decide who is *anybody*.
2. You apply your alleged "principal" on an "as needed" basis.
Already discussed and verified as fact.
Your new word for the day is...
sarcasm
The Bird of Prey
ola,
O' great and wise purveyor of knowledge. Praytell you know of the origin of the phrase "missed the brass ring"? Please regale us with the story so that all may benefit.
The Bird of Prey
Lets go over this again.
My point was not that using family members in a derogatory fashion is offensive, for indeed it is. My point was that *you* only find it offensive when directed at *you*. You have verified this several times, yet still *think* you have *won* something.
And to prove your point you use foul language and namecalling.
What was your point? Oh yeah, *anybody* can make derogatory remarks about *anyone's* family members...except yours.
yep, you're right, you won.
The Bird of Prey
Nothing like a good old fashioned multisyllabic profane name to definitively declare yourself the victor.
I guess your nickname "Ironhead" has multiple meanings as well.
The Bird of Prey
As a matter of fact...
I don't Blast folks for using profanity. Matt has provided a simple tool that allows me to deal with it quite effectively. Whenever I come across it, I report the violation of the TOU. If Matt chooses to leave it in place that is his decision. I don't see every instance but I do report those I see. Most folks here at IH have the wisdom to refrain from profanity.
Nice try to evade the issue. However in doing so you only reinforce my point. You only object when the reference is directed at you.
What you've failed to realize is that you've been flat on your back since you stepped into the ring. And you keep declaring yourself the winner from the prone position.
BTW, you appear to be an expert in bestiality. Is that what you learned from mommy and daddy?
The Bird of Prey
I have stated multiple times that I condemn bringing family into these conflicts.
Incorrect. You should have said "I have stated multiple times that I condemn bringing family into these conflicts, except where Bird of Prey is concerned."
You really don't like it much when I stuff your own words down your throat do you?
This can stop you know. And you have two outs!
1. Admit you are a hypocrite and have a double standard.
or
2. Blast CH for bringing family into it.
You can't have it both ways. Either you condemn it or you don't.
The Bird of Prey
huh?
*Your* buddy CH, waltzes in and opens his commentary as described. You not only don't oppose this violation of *your* stated principles but actively support it.
You have a double standard. Justify it however you want. but that fact is now proven.
So lets get our facts straight.
1. You can dish it out, but can't take it.
2. You have a double standard.
3. Your liberal use of profanity has lessened it's effectiveness in shocking your opponent.
4. Your *perfect* undefeated record is a lie.
5. Your parents failed miserably in bringing up a respectable citizen.
thank you for playing
The Bird of Prey
As I said in my first post. That is where I thought you would stand. I'm just letting you know that it does affect you. CH is *your* buddy, not mine.
Oh, and one more thing.
1. I accuse you of having a double standard.
2. You admit having a double standard.
3. Somehow *I* lose this argument?
What's with all of these references to homosexual activity? You have some kind of complex? Or are you planning on coming out of the closet?
The Bird of Prey
Excuse me.
Let me clarify. I STILL haven't seen you condemn CH for making such a post. By now you have had ample time to go back and *read* it. If you haven't it would be because you've chosen not to. In fact, your every post here has been *supportive* of CH and the post he made.
I am not asking you to defend me. That would be like letting the fox guard the henhouse. I do however insist that you be consistent in your vehement condemnation of the act of bringing family into (or in this case opening the attack with such) a fight. Instead it is clear you do condone CH's actions. In your own words...
But you set the rules of engagement on the family thing when it comes to fighting with you.
That is one flexible set of principles you have there.
The Bird of Prey
me, a victim?
You obviously misunderstand. That CH chose that particular method of attack is not bothersome. I expect such from folks like you and he. What I am calling you on and you continue to try (and fail miserably) and defend is the use of a similar tactic. You expect *anyone* to take the profanity, namecalling and whatever else you deem an appropriate *response* to an opponents commentary and not return the favor?
As for what I do...I just give back what I see you dishing out. Per your established rules. By condoning the CH family reference you invalidate your own rule of leaving family out of it. In which case I stand by my original statement.
Your momma failed to raise you right.
The Bird of Prey
You know full well of whom I speak when i use the term "posse".
Your buddy, CH started this not I. That he chose to use a method of attack condemned by you is not surprising. Equally a non event is your hypocrisy. Mentioning family is a definite no no when your family is mentioned and perfectly acceptable when it is used against someone you oppose.
Your buddy CH wanted a fight. He can have one. No holds barred. No problem on my end. I can dish it out as well as I can take it. If he wants to get family involved, that's his error, he'll learn that "Momma" is more than he bargained for.
I brought you up simply because CH is one of your best buddies. Always ready to help you when your opponent gets the better of you. Ready to pitch in with profanity or whatever level of insult you both deem fit. Face it, you have no problem dishing it out, but can't take it when the same tactics are used against you.
BTW, do you kiss you wife with that mouth?
The Bird of Prey
Josh,
How about changing the rule about the midnight deadline to 9:25am? Then you could still have gotten in. It would also make it more open to the morning people that might not be logged on between 4pm and midnight.
One other proposed rule change, set a minimum spread between picks. What happened to Matt yesterday wasn't right.
The Bird of Prey
According to NFPA 13 Pre-fab rafters are rated the same as gusset-plated rafters. However, due to the solid obstruction they present (as opposed to the open style of gusset-plated rafters) the spacing rules for fire sprinkler protection are more restrictive.
Depending on the configuration and type of sprinkler used the pre-fab truss could require a greater number of sprinklers to achieve the same level of fire protection compared to an identical structure with gusset-plated trusses.
Having designed several Fire Sprinkler systems where pre-fab trusses were used between floors, I can say that the systems did not have significantly more sprinklers than they would have using standard trusses.
The Bird of Prey
Now that is impressive!
43 jobs in 46 years! Since you mentioned being 16 in one of the references I used that as a starting point. Very impressive. I am sure some of these positions ran concurrently but you also indicate there are more to be added so I'll ignore the duplicity in the absence of that info.
Average time on job: 1 year 25.46 days.
Congratulations! You found a way to avoid ever having to speak at Career Day!
The Bird of Prey
I knew I could count on the Posse!
As I knew what your response to my question would be. I just love a hypocrite!
The Bird of Prey
I don't recall asking you to choose, or even to be my "friend". However, if CH and JXM are making such a request...what kind of real friend ever picks your friends for you? Or are you too weak minded to be able to choose for yourself?
I don't see where it should be a problem for you to enjoy exchanging with all parties mentioned. Starklef posts some good jokes. JXM puts up some good P&F info and occasionally has a good idea. I've been known to post about stocks once in a while. CH seems to be an expert at picking fights. A little variety for everyone.
So, FTR, I am not asking you to choose. Just be yourself and enjoy.
BTW, I have it on good authority that DAD doesn't let Starklef hang out in bars drinking with anyone. Maybe you got your image of JXM and CH mixed up there.
The Bird of Prey
Poet,
I'll be out this evening too, as usual. Talk about muddy waters! We'll probably have to spend several days just sorting out the definitions!
For example: the difference between a mass murderer and a serial killer...sociopath vs. psychopath...Oh the fun we can have.
The Bird of Prey
That is good to hear.
That is basically how I understood things would be when this was discussed last August.
I agree that most of the features that might present costs that needed to be passed on to members are likely outside the focus of a message board site to begin with. That said, if IH has enough users will to pay for such a service and IH can profit from it...do what you gotta do.
BTW, as I see it there are two subclasses of "grandfathered"...those that have made a donation or subscribed, and those that haven't. I would never suggest that someone that simply signed up for the site in August 2001, and hasn't been much of a contributor in any fashion to the development of the site (especially in a financial sense) should be "entitled" to a lifetime free ride for all things IH regardless of cost.
I don't know how many "grandfathered" users made donations or subscribed, but if the number were small enough and the cost insignificant enough, I would hope you would consider just letting that group have the feature anyway. Especially if you and Matt are making the big bucks with IH!
The Bird of Prey
Should Mrs. Yates get the Death Penalty?
This is not a question to be taken lightly. Yet many have already decided that she shouldn't have even been found guilty of Capitol Murder. Why? Because she is mentally ill, she shouldn't be held accountable for her actions.
Pardon me, but that is the most ludicrous poppycock I have ever heard. Using that standard John Wayne Gacey, Jeffery Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Henry Lee Lucas, Otis Thorpe, Ed Gein, Albert Fish and a host of other killers, pedophiles and rapists would have been freed to inflict unmentionable horror on other unsuspecting families.
That some kind of mental disorder exists or existed in all of the above named individuals is a given. No sane person commits mass murder. But mass murderers do know what they do is wrong. They go to great lengths to conceal their activities.
Mrs. Yates is a mass murderer. She coldly calculated and executed the systematic murder of five individuals...one at a time. She has actively participated in a scheme to absolve her of responsibility for her crimes.
Luckily the jury did not fall for her game. Let's hope that they continue to follow the law and not be swayed by the "popular" appeal for "sympathy" to her "condition".
Let Justice prevail for her victims. Sentence her to death.
The Bird of Prey
Bob,
Currently, grandfathered and subscriber memberships are identical in that everything mentioned above is available to both. The only change to this that I can foresee is if we get any arrangements with other companies to make their services available for free or discounted to our members. I'd have to limit those to subscribers if they're deals that cost us money. And I've been in talks with one such company for several weeks to do just that.
Concerning Grandfathered status:
When Matt initiated the fee structure creating the "grandfathered" user, someone suggested that a means be set up so that "grandfathered" users could send in a "donation" to help keep the site going cash wise. Matt should still have a record of those transactions.
I mention this because of what was stated above would appear to mean that for certain features that may become available, "grandfathered" users would be excluded unless they pony up and subscribe.
As one of those "grandfathered" users that has supported IH both in spirit and with cash, this strikes me as a bit callous. I understand IH needs to turn a profit. But a covenant was entered into and now it appears you wish to depart from that covenant.
Before you begin thinking I am about to get angry or threatening let me offer an alternative that I feel would be fair to all concerned.
1. Decide on the amount needed for a lifetime membership from a grandfathered member.
2. Verify if a member has already made a contribution. If so deduct that contribution from the amount decided on in step one.
3. Convert those grandfathered members that have contributed at least the amount decided on in step one to subscribers.
4. Inform all grandfathered members of their status. Indicate that they have been converted to subscribers, need to contribute X to be converted, or can remain as Grandfathered with the option of converting at the price decided in Step one at some point in the future.
5. As new features are added make provisions for all users to be able to purchase those features on an a la carte basis.
I trust that IH management will continue its long standing tradition of keeping its covenants with its users. Even when they were delivered as comments in discussion on the site itself.
The Bird of Prey
icon thoughts...
1. Only in profile. If folks don't read profiles, so be it.
2. Icon for Premium and Suspended only. Free members would not get an icon at all. They cost extra you know. 8) No point in singling out the grandfathered premium members. Suspended members should also be listed in the jail Ibox with a scheduled release date.
The Bird of Prey
Sorry,
That kind of comment only works with JXM. Besides, I should let her take you. She'd certainly teach you a few things. And your alleged "unbeaten" status would be history.
Hmmm, I wonder if JXM will take offense that family was brought into an argument by one of his "friends". Nah, he'll only get offended if you mention *his* family, everyone else is fair game.
OMT, you might want to check the status of you gluteus maximus, you appear to have suffered a permanent reduction due to overuse of LMAO.
The Bird of Prey
If I thought there was a real good chance that NPCT was on it's way out I wouldn't even be talking with you at this point. I expect they will get a good financing deal, I just want to see it first.
I am cautious. Perhaps if I had been a shareholder for 3+ years I would not be at this point. Perhaps if I had bought at less than a dollar I would be more excited about the possibilties for NPCT. But I am looking at a stock trading at it's high. A stock that has traded and backed down from this high recently. A stock that is engaged in a number of discussions on a number of fronts. Any one of which can make or break this company.
Several folks here have said that this has the potential to be a thirty dollar stock. If that comes to fruition the difference in owning it at $1.70 or $2.50 is insignificant. It won't go to $30 tomorrow.
All I am saying is I have chosen to be cautious in light of the decisions facing this company. Even if all of the things happening occured positively on the same day. I will still have an opportunity to "get in" and make a handsome profit. Sure some of you will make more. But you chose to take a greater risk.
Now really, why would anybody have a problem with that?
The Bird of Prey
Thank you Kathy,
I am glad to hear that Paul has made such a definitive statement. I take it that this statement was made since the last filing? And that he indicated the reason (influx of cash, reduction in costs, etc.) to support that statement.
I have a tendency to "trust" what is filed more than what is said.
Additionally I have not said that the company is "running out of money". Several sources, including yourself have indicated that a number of financing options have been presented and are being reviewed. This is a good thing. Whether a deal is struck and announced tomorrow or next January is immaterial at this point. There is often a great deal of difference between the amount of cash and resources needed to "last" and the amount needed to grow the company. My only concern is that this company not get bitten by the toxic bug...again.
The Bird of Prey
This is as it should be.
And it couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
The Bird of Prey
And I can certainly understand why that should be taken as a positive sign.
However, a number of independent sources have stated that at the current burn rate, based on the amount of cash available as stated in the most recent filing...NPCT would experience a cash shortage during the spring of this year. Clearly, Management is exploring a number of options to raise cash because they feel that they have something here. Hopefully they have learned the lesson about "toxic" funding and will not accept a deal that could jeopardize the company's future. Keep in mind though that the purveyors of "toxic" deals are experts at concealing their true purpose.
In other words...We won't know until we know.
The Bird of Prey
