Great Depression ~ Wall Street Crash of 1929
The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as Black Tuesday (October 29),[1] the Great Crash, or the Stock Market Crash of 1929, began on October 24, 1929 ("Black Thursday"), and was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States, when taking into consideration the full extent and duration of its aftereffects.[2] The crash, which followed the London Stock Exchange's crash of September, signaled the beginning of the 10-year Great Depression that affected all Western industrialized countries.
Despite the dangers of speculation, many believed that the stock market would continue to rise forever
The crash followed a speculative boom that had taken hold in the late 1920s.
Iron and steel led the way with doubled gains.
Such figures set up a crescendo of stock-exchange speculation which had led hundreds of thousands of Americans to invest heavily in the stock market.
The rising share prices encouraged more people to invest; people hoped the share prices would rise further. Speculation thus fueled further rises and created an economic bubble.
The Great Crash of 1929 propelled gold, a historically viable store of value and durable medium of exchange, to unprecedented value.
The Wall Street Crash had a major impact on the U.S. and world economy, and it has been the source of intense academic debate—historical, economic, and political—from its aftermath until the present day.

Great Recession ~ 2007-2010
The Great Recession was related to the financial crisis of 2007–08 and U.S. subprime mortgage crisis of 2007–09
The Great Recession has resulted in the scarcity of valuable assets in the market economy and the collapse of the financial sector in the world economy.
contraction phase of a business cycle
The Great Recession met the IMF criteria for being a global recession
Another narrative focuses on high levels of private debt in the US economy. USA household debt as a percentage of annual disposable personal income was 127% at the end of 2007, versus 77% in 1990.

Black Monday (1987)
In late 1985 and early 1986, the United States economy began shifting from a rapidly growing recovery from the early 1980s recession to a slower growing expansion, which resulted in a brief "soft landing" period as the economy slowed and inflation dropped. The stock market advanced significantly, with the Dow peaking in August 1987 at 2,722 points, or 44% over the previous year's closing of 1,895 points. Further financial uncertainty may have resulted from the collapse of OPEC in early 1986, which led to crude oil price decreasing by more than 50% by mid-1986.
The Black Monday decline was—and currently remains—the largest one-day percentage decline in the DJIA. (Saturday, December 12, 1914, is sometimes erroneously cited as the largest one-day percentage decline of the DJIA. In reality, the ostensible decline of 24.39% was created retroactively by a redefinition of the DJIA in 1916.)
Possible causes for the decline included program trading, overvaluation, illiquidity and market psychology.

Stop Chasing Happiness: 17 Alternative Ways to Live Your Best Possible Life
A large part of what less than happy people have is a problem with their patterns of attention.
In the same way the attention of an extrovert is naturally directed at social communication, the attention of an entrepreneur seeks out business opportunities, and an artist looks for creative expression, an unhappy person tends to look directly at happiness.
If you find yourself asking, Am I happy? Replace the question with: Do I have [insert word] in my life?

2008 Greek riots ******
a 15-year-old Greek student, was killed by two special officers in Exarcheia district of central Athens
The murder of a young student by police resulted in large protests and demonstrations, which escalated to widespread rioting, with numerous rioters damaging property and engaging riot police with Molotov cocktails, stones and other objects. Demonstrations and rioting soon spread to several other cities, including Thessaloniki, the country's second-largest city.
Outside Greece, solidarity demonstrations, riots and, in some cases, clashes with local police also took place in more than 70 cities around the world, in Europe including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Bordeaux, Brussels, Cologne, Copenhagen, Dublin, Frankfurt, the Hague, London, Madrid, Nicosia, Paphos, Paris, Rome and Seville and globally from Sao Paulo, San Francisco and Wellington to Buenos Aires and Siberia. Newspaper Kathimerini called the rioting "the worst Greece has seen since the restoration of democracy in 1974".

Mistrial declared in case of South Carolina officer who shot Walter Scott after traffic stop
Slager, who said he feared for his life during the encounter, was charged remarkably quickly amid a shifting climate sparked by protests in Ferguson, Mo., just months before Scott’s death.
Over the police radio, Slager can be heard calling in a description of Scott before yelling, “Taser, Taser, Taser!”
Speaking on the witness stand, Slager was asked by a prosecutor whether he agreed that Scott was unarmed and running away.
In the footage that captured Scott’s death, Slager could be seen placing an item — his Taser — near Scott’s body after the shooting
Gov. Nikki Haley, in a statement, said she expects a new trial in the case. “It is my understanding that there will be, as quickly as possible, a new trial where the Scott family and all of South Carolina will hopefully receive the closure that a verdict brings. Justice is not always immediate, but we must all have faith that it will be served. I certainly do,” she said.
Scott and DuBose were among 991 people fatally shot by police last year, according to a Washington Post database tracking such deaths. Shootings by police were up at the midway point of this year; police are on pace to fatally shoot about the same number of people this year as last year.

Cleveland: 12-year-old's police shooting death his own fault
Pleading innocence, immunity and ignorance, the city of Cleveland responded to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Tamir Rice's family by saying the 12-year-old's death was his own fault.
As to the scores of other allegations in the lawsuit, the city responds by saying that they are untrue, that the independent investigation by Cuyahoga County is still going on, or that the city "is without knowledge or information sufficient to form a belief as to the truth."
Their tactics that preceded his death and the subsequent victim blaming are examples of the institutionalized behavior that has beset the Cleveland Police Department.
"It is just incredible that the police officer, based on what we see on the video surveillance recording, gave Tamir three verbal commands to put his hands up and drop the weapon, based on what we see in the video. It was less than 1.7 seconds. The car hadn't even stopped. It's unbelievable."
A cop, department with histories
It was also reported in December that Loehmann's previous employer, the Independence Police Department in a Cleveland suburb, had numerous complaints about the officer, including that he was "distracted and weepy" and "emotionally immature" and had demonstrated "a pattern of lack of maturity, indiscretion and not following instructions."
He also showed "dangerous loss of composure during live range training" and an "inability to manage personal stress," the department said.

Spin Cycle: Inside The Clinton Propaganda Machine
Howard Kurtz:
Spin Cycle lets the amateur politico in on the behind-the-scenes machinations and conflicts that otherwise go unreported, unveiling a cast of shady characters and spin doctors whose sole duty is unwavering partiality to the president
But Spin Cycle is not so much about the distribution of propaganda as it is about coping with the rapid exchange of information in a time of, thanks to 24-hour venues like CNN and the Internet, instant discourse. Cynics, of course, already distrust both the media and the White House, and books like Spin Cycle won't change their minds. But those still holding onto the fantasy of an honest government and noble press
Kurtz's book is the type of tell-all that attempts to vanquish any remaining illusions of truth and integrity in politics.

Local mines endure despite low copper prices
The price of copper has been in a steady decline since 2011, due primarily to a decreased demand from China. There are signs that this trend may be experiencing a slight recovery. The Chinese economy has begun to improve, and demand continues to outpace copper production. Analysts are cautious, but optimistic for the copper price forecast. The copper price closing on Sept 13th was $2.10, up slightly from the start of the month, but it still hovers near a six-year low.
Copper has been an important factor in humanity’s development. The metal is soft and easy to shape, though it is too soft to be useful to make tools. The discovery five millennia ago that combining copper with tin will create bronze, a much sturdier metal, launched the bronze age. Copper was the first strategic metal, and it became one of the first global trade goods.
The Gold Rush colonized California and Silver was the founding drive behind migration to Nevada, but for Arizona that building block was Copper. Many early Arizona towns were built by companies staking copper mining claims like Phelps Dodge. Places like Bisbee, Superior, Miami and Jerome exist only because of copper mining.
