Larry Fink, 61, tall and outgoing and passionate about his business, is the chairman, CEO, and co-founder of the largest asset-management company in the world, BlackRock.
At 6:00 a.m., in his office, he hopes for an hour of what he calls “dead time”: time to think.
then--as the financial world blew up--no less than the then-largest asset manager, Barclays Global Investors, with its mountain of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) called iShares.
He doesn’t fight the characterization, conceding, “I ruin everybody’s life.”
By the end of 2013 the company had a colossal $4.3 trillion of assets under management (AUM). For the year, the company’s fees from managing that pile ran to about $9 billion--about 22 basis points per dollar of assets. Other businesses took in $1 billion in revenues, for a company total of $10 billion, along with $2.9 billion in profits. What was once eight partners has grown to more than 11,000 employees worldwide.
The question of how much power BlackRock draws from the multitudinous shares it has to vote--and then how it chooses to use power--is complex
So if a proprietor of a passive fund--say, a BlackRock--wants to improve the quality of the kingdom, the only weapons available are words or votes.
Still, he did receive what he describes as “angry” calls from two activists--Carl Icahn and another Fink wouldn’t identify--who were less admiring of the message
Fink himself appears ambivalent about the subject of BlackRock’s power. He clearly likes having “a voice” and may even see its judicious use as helpful in his negotiations with Washington.
No company wishes to be a SIFI because these creatures (which include three nonbanks that have already fallen into the pen--GE Capital, American International Group, and Prudential Financial) must report to the Federal Reserve, whose regulation is expected to be strict.

Psychological torture uses non-physical methods that cause psychological suffering. Its effects are not immediately apparent unless they alter the behavior of the tortured person. Since there is no international political consensus on what constitutes psychological torture, it is often overlooked, denied, and referred to by different names.[citation needed]
Psychological torture is less well known than physical torture and tends to be subtle and much easier to conceal. In practice the distinctions between physical and psychological torture are often blurred.[citation needed] Physical torture is the inflicting of severe pain or suffering on a person. In contrast, psychological torture is directed at the psyche with calculated violations of psychological needs, along with deep damage to psychological structures and the breakage of beliefs underpinning normal sanity. Torturers often inflict both types of torture in combination to compound the associated effects.[citation needed]
Psychological torture also includes deliberate use of extreme stressors and situations such as mock execution, shunning, violation of deep-seated social or sexual norms and taboos, or extended solitary confinement. Because psychological torture needs no physical violence to be effective, it is possible to induce severe psychological pain, suffering, and trauma with no externally visible effects.[citation needed]
Rape and other forms of sexual abuse are often used as methods of torture for interrogative or punitive purposes.[149]
In medical torture, medical practitioners use torture to judge what victims can endure, to apply treatments that enhance torture, or act as torturers in their own right. Josef Mengele and Shiro Ishii were infamous during and after World War II for their involvement in medical torture and murder. In recent years, however, there has been a push to end medical complicity in torture through both international and state-based legal strategies, as well as litigations against individual physicians.[150]
Pharmacological torture is the use of drugs to produce psychological or physical pain or discomfort. Tickle torture is an unusual form of torture which nevertheless has been documented, and can be both physically and psychologically painful.[
Thus, the Catechism of the Catholic Church (published in 1994) condemns the use of torture as a grave violation of Human Rights. In No. 2297-2298 it states:
Torture, which uses physical or moral violence to extract confessions, punish the guilty, frighten opponents, or satisfy hatred is contrary to respect for the person and for human dignity... In times past, cruel practices were commonly used by legitimate governments to maintain law and order, often without protest from the Pastors of the Church, who themselves adopted in their own tribunals the prescriptions of Roman law concerning torture. Regrettable as these facts are, the Church always taught the duty of clemency and mercy. She forbade clerics to shed blood. In recent times it has become evident that these cruel practices were neither necessary for public order, nor in conformity with the legitimate rights of the human person. On the contrary, these practices led to ones even more degrading. It is necessary to work for their abolition. We must pray for the victims and their tormentors.
Historical methods of execution and capital punishment
For most of recorded history, capital punishments were often cruel and inhumane. Severe historical penalties include breaking wheel, boiling to death, flaying, slow slicing, disembowelment, crucifixion, impalement, crushing, stoning, execution by burning, dismemberment, sawing, decapitation, scaphism, or necklacing.[53]

Roman Catholic Church

Throughout the Early Middle Ages, the Catholic Church generally opposed the use of torture during criminal proceedings. This is evident from a letter sent by Pope Saint Nicholas the Great to Khan Boris of the Bulgars in AD 866, delivered in response to a series of questions from the former and concerned with the ongoing Christianisation of Bulgaria.
Organizations such as Amnesty International serve to expose widespread human rights violations and hold the individuals accountable to the international community.

Although torture is sanctioned by some states, it is prohibited under international law and the domestic laws of most countries.
Although widely illegal and reviled there is an ongoing debate as to what exactly is and is not legally defined as torture. It is a serious violation of human rights, and is declared to be unacceptable (but not illegal) by Article 5 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Signatories of the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and the Additional Protocols I and II of 8 June 1977 officially agree not to torture captured persons in armed conflicts, whether international or internal. Torture is also prohibited for the signatories of the United Nations Convention Against Torture, which has been ratified by 158 countries.[1]
International law ~ is the set of rules generally regarded and accepted as binding in relations between states and between nations.[1][2] It serves as a framework for the practice of stable and organized international relations.[3] International law differs from state-based legal systems in that it is primarily applicable to countries rather than to private citizens. National law may become international law when treaties delegate national jurisdiction to supranational tribunals such as the European Court of Human Rights or the International Criminal Court. Treaties such as the Geneva Conventions may require national law to conform to respective parts.
Much of international law is consent-based governance. This means that a state member is not obliged to abide by this type of international law, unless it has expressly consented to a particular course of conduct.[4] This is an issue of state sovereignty. However, other aspects of international law are not consent-based but still are obligatory upon state and non-state actors such as customary international law and peremptory norms (jus cogens).

Charlottesville mayor: 1 dead during violence around 'Unite the Right' rally
One person was killed amid violence on Saturday at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, according to Mayor Mike Signer. "I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here. I urge all people of good will -- go home," Signer wrote on Twitter. He did not provide details as to how the death occurred.
At least seven people were hurt when a speeding car slammed into another car that was navigating through a throng of counterprotesters in Charlottesville, where a "Unite the Right" rally of white nationalist and other right-wing groups was to take place.

Researchers at the computer security company Symantec said the new attack was using the same hacking tool created by the National Security Agency that was used in the WannaCry attacks. Called Eternal Blue, the tool was among dozens leaked online last April by a group known as the Shadow Brokers. The N.S.A. has not acknowledged its tools were used in WannaCry or other attacks.
“I first saw reports of this attack around 8 a.m. Eastern time coming from Ukraine, but it’s too early to tell who’s behind this,” Mr. Smith said.

Psychological manipulation
is a type of social influence that aims to change the behavior or perception of others through abusive, deceptive, or underhanded tactics.[1] By advancing the interests of the manipulator, often at another's expense, such methods could be considered exploitative, abusive, devious, and deceptive. The process of manipulation involves bringing an unknowing victim under the domination of the manipulator, often using deception, and using the victim to serve their own purposes.
Requirements for successful manipulation
According to psychology author George K. Simon, successful psychological manipulation primarily involves the manipulator:[2]
1.Concealing aggressive intentions and behaviors.
2.Knowing the psychological vulnerabilities of the victim to determine which tactics are likely to be the most effective.
3.Having a sufficient level of ruthlessness to have no qualms about causing harm to the victim if necessary.
Consequently, the manipulation is likely to be accomplished through covert aggressive (relational aggressive or passive aggressive) means.[2]
Motivations of manipulators
Manipulators can have various possible motivations, including but not limited to:[1]
the need to advance their own purposes and personal gain at virtually any cost to others
a strong need to attain feelings of power and superiority in relationships with others
a want and need to feel in control (aka. control freak)
a desire to gain a feeling of power over others in order to raise their perception of self-esteem
boredom, or growing tired of his/her surroundings, seeing it as a game more than hurting others
covert agenda, criminal or otherwise, including financial manipulation (often seen when the elderly or unsuspecting, unprotected wealthy are intentionally targeted for the sole purpose of obtaining a victim's financial assets)

Penthouse (magazine)
The magazine was founded on humble beginnings.
An April 2002 New York Times article reported Guccione as saying that Penthouse grossed $3.5 billion to $4 billion over the 30-year life of the company, with net income of almost half a billion dollars.
On January 15, 2016, a press release emanating from then owner FriendFinder Networks announced that Penthouse would shutter its print operations and move to all digital. However, managing director Kelly Holland quickly disavowed the decision and pledged to keep the print version of the magazine alive.
On August 12, 2003, General Media, the parent company of the magazine, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Penthouse filed for bankruptcy protection on September 17, 2013.

Great Depression ~ Wall Street Crash of 1929
The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as Black Tuesday (October 29),[1] the Great Crash, or the Stock Market Crash of 1929, began on October 24, 1929 ("Black Thursday"), and was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States, when taking into consideration the full extent and duration of its aftereffects.[2] The crash, which followed the London Stock Exchange's crash of September, signaled the beginning of the 10-year Great Depression that affected all Western industrialized countries.
Despite the dangers of speculation, many believed that the stock market would continue to rise forever
The crash followed a speculative boom that had taken hold in the late 1920s.
Iron and steel led the way with doubled gains.
Such figures set up a crescendo of stock-exchange speculation which had led hundreds of thousands of Americans to invest heavily in the stock market.
The rising share prices encouraged more people to invest; people hoped the share prices would rise further. Speculation thus fueled further rises and created an economic bubble.
The Great Crash of 1929 propelled gold, a historically viable store of value and durable medium of exchange, to unprecedented value.
The Wall Street Crash had a major impact on the U.S. and world economy, and it has been the source of intense academic debate—historical, economic, and political—from its aftermath until the present day.

Black Monday (1987)
In late 1985 and early 1986, the United States economy began shifting from a rapidly growing recovery from the early 1980s recession to a slower growing expansion, which resulted in a brief "soft landing" period as the economy slowed and inflation dropped. The stock market advanced significantly, with the Dow peaking in August 1987 at 2,722 points, or 44% over the previous year's closing of 1,895 points. Further financial uncertainty may have resulted from the collapse of OPEC in early 1986, which led to crude oil price decreasing by more than 50% by mid-1986.
The Black Monday decline was—and currently remains—the largest one-day percentage decline in the DJIA. (Saturday, December 12, 1914, is sometimes erroneously cited as the largest one-day percentage decline of the DJIA. In reality, the ostensible decline of 24.39% was created retroactively by a redefinition of the DJIA in 1916.)
Possible causes for the decline included program trading, overvaluation, illiquidity and market psychology.

2008 Greek riots ******
a 15-year-old Greek student, was killed by two special officers in Exarcheia district of central Athens
The murder of a young student by police resulted in large protests and demonstrations, which escalated to widespread rioting, with numerous rioters damaging property and engaging riot police with Molotov cocktails, stones and other objects. Demonstrations and rioting soon spread to several other cities, including Thessaloniki, the country's second-largest city.
Outside Greece, solidarity demonstrations, riots and, in some cases, clashes with local police also took place in more than 70 cities around the world, in Europe including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Bordeaux, Brussels, Cologne, Copenhagen, Dublin, Frankfurt, the Hague, London, Madrid, Nicosia, Paphos, Paris, Rome and Seville and globally from Sao Paulo, San Francisco and Wellington to Buenos Aires and Siberia. Newspaper Kathimerini called the rioting "the worst Greece has seen since the restoration of democracy in 1974".

Mistrial declared in case of South Carolina officer who shot Walter Scott after traffic stop
Slager, who said he feared for his life during the encounter, was charged remarkably quickly amid a shifting climate sparked by protests in Ferguson, Mo., just months before Scott’s death.
Over the police radio, Slager can be heard calling in a description of Scott before yelling, “Taser, Taser, Taser!”
Speaking on the witness stand, Slager was asked by a prosecutor whether he agreed that Scott was unarmed and running away.
In the footage that captured Scott’s death, Slager could be seen placing an item — his Taser — near Scott’s body after the shooting
Gov. Nikki Haley, in a statement, said she expects a new trial in the case. “It is my understanding that there will be, as quickly as possible, a new trial where the Scott family and all of South Carolina will hopefully receive the closure that a verdict brings. Justice is not always immediate, but we must all have faith that it will be served. I certainly do,” she said.
Scott and DuBose were among 991 people fatally shot by police last year, according to a Washington Post database tracking such deaths. Shootings by police were up at the midway point of this year; police are on pace to fatally shoot about the same number of people this year as last year.

Cleveland: 12-year-old's police shooting death his own fault
Pleading innocence, immunity and ignorance, the city of Cleveland responded to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Tamir Rice's family by saying the 12-year-old's death was his own fault.
As to the scores of other allegations in the lawsuit, the city responds by saying that they are untrue, that the independent investigation by Cuyahoga County is still going on, or that the city "is without knowledge or information sufficient to form a belief as to the truth."
Their tactics that preceded his death and the subsequent victim blaming are examples of the institutionalized behavior that has beset the Cleveland Police Department.
"It is just incredible that the police officer, based on what we see on the video surveillance recording, gave Tamir three verbal commands to put his hands up and drop the weapon, based on what we see in the video. It was less than 1.7 seconds. The car hadn't even stopped. It's unbelievable."
A cop, department with histories
It was also reported in December that Loehmann's previous employer, the Independence Police Department in a Cleveland suburb, had numerous complaints about the officer, including that he was "distracted and weepy" and "emotionally immature" and had demonstrated "a pattern of lack of maturity, indiscretion and not following instructions."
He also showed "dangerous loss of composure during live range training" and an "inability to manage personal stress," the department said.

Spin Cycle: Inside The Clinton Propaganda Machine
Howard Kurtz:
Spin Cycle lets the amateur politico in on the behind-the-scenes machinations and conflicts that otherwise go unreported, unveiling a cast of shady characters and spin doctors whose sole duty is unwavering partiality to the president
But Spin Cycle is not so much about the distribution of propaganda as it is about coping with the rapid exchange of information in a time of, thanks to 24-hour venues like CNN and the Internet, instant discourse. Cynics, of course, already distrust both the media and the White House, and books like Spin Cycle won't change their minds. But those still holding onto the fantasy of an honest government and noble press
Kurtz's book is the type of tell-all that attempts to vanquish any remaining illusions of truth and integrity in politics.
