Should have seen this windfall coming when SCG declared VC Summer nuclear units 2+3 a total tax loss.
Those law firms filing lawsuits may be barking up the wrong tree. Anyone who had bought SCG earlier in the 50 dollar range can't be too upset because it would have taken years for SCG to recover. Too bad I didn't buy yesterday at $39.
Only question is what price is the bottom?
$SCG SCANA upgraded at Barclays after nuclear project abandoned
SCANA (SCG +4.1%) is upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight with a $73 price target, raised from $65, at Barclays on optimism over the company's decision to abandon its new nuclear construction project at the V.C. Summer site.
Barclays sees a 50% chance - the most likely scenario - that SCG will recover all the money it spent on the project and execute a $650M share buyback initiative; the firm attributes a 10% chance that SCG will recover all of its money but be forced to spend $650M on building natural gas plants, and a 30% chance that it will get back half the money and use the money it is collecting from Toshiba to cut electricity rates.
The firm sees a 10% chance that SCG's net investment in the project is securitized, which it says would be a worst case scenario for the company.
$SCG SCANA to abandon new South Carolina nuclear project; shares halted
SCANA (SCG -0.6%) says its South Carolina Electric & Gas subsidiary will
cease construction of the two new nuclear units at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station and file a plan of abandonment of the project; shares are halted.
SCG says its decision was reached after considering the additional costs to complete the units, the uncertainty over the availability of production tax credits for the project, the amount of anticipated guaranty settlement payments from Toshiba, and the decision of project co-owner Santee Cooper to suspend construction.
Fluor (FLR -3.5%), a party to two subcontracts to manage construction at the project, sinks on the news.
Lockout at Westinghouse plant could hit SCANA, Southern construction
Westinghouse Electric's lockout of 172 unionized workers at its nuclear components manufacturing plant in Newington, N.H., could impact construction at SCANA’s (SCG +0.6%) V.C. Summer plant and the similar Southern Co. (SO +0.3%) Vogtle project, reports say.
The Newington factory makes the reactor vessel barrel and other parts for new AP1000 plants such as those at Summer and Vogtle, and "disruptions in that supply chain could further complicate construction."
SCG and SO are deciding whether to continue building the reactors or abandon construction in the wake of Westinghouse's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in March.
SCANA to reassess reactor project after Westinghouse bankruptcy
SCANA (SCG -0.2%) and its partner, state-owned Santee Cooper, say they will spend at least the next 30 days determining whether the $14B V.C. Summer nuclear plant construction project in South Carolina should be completed following the bankruptcy of top contractor Westinghouse Electric.
CEO Kevin Marsh told investors on a conference call yesterday afternoon that SCG hopes to see the project finished, since the energy to come from two additional nuclear reactors is needed to meet customer demands.
"Our preferred option is to finish the plants. The least preferred option is abandonment,” said CEO Kevin Marsh.
The CEO says Westinghouse has agreed to stay on the job for the short term, and chief construction contractor Flour (FLR +1.3%) says it will continue work.
Critics say the over-budget and overdue project should be scrapped, fearing cutsomers will be hit with more rate hikes by SCG subsidiary South Carolina Electric & Gas.
SCANA hopes to finish South Carolina reactor despite Westinghouse woes
SCANA (SCG -1.1%) and state-owned utility Santee Cooper, partners on the project at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in South Carolina, say they are working with Westinghouse to reach an agreement, subject to bankruptcy court approval, that allows for work on the project to continue toward completion of the units.
The agreement, filed today with the court as part of Westinghouse's bankruptcy filings, allows for a transition and evaluation period during which SCG and Santee Cooper say they will determine the most prudent path forward for the project.
Both Santee Cooper and SCG subsidiary South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. have raised rates several times to fund the project, which is behind schedule and over the original projected cost.

When the dividend seekers come they will think of utilities first imo.
This company has a nice dividend. I am not sure but, I hear they may cut it(by a little) but that should only improve their profit margin in time.
BOSTON (Thomson Financial) - Scana Corp. Friday said second-quarter net
earnings rose to $57 million, or 48 cents a share, from $55 million, or 47 cents
a share, in the year-ago period.
Revenue for the Columbia, S.C.-based company rose to $1.22 billion from
$1.01 billion a year earlier.
Scana said earnings improved for the second quarter of 2008 compared to last
