My shares go back 30+ years to Rockwell International which split into Rockwell Automation and Rockwell Collins in 2001. Each of those had numerous spinoffs. In 2018 Rockwell Collins was acquired by United Technologies (UTX) for cash and shares. United Technologies is in the process of merging with Raytheon and also spinning off two major divisions, Otis Elevator and Carrier Air Conditioning.

Among the old spinoffs were shares in auto parts company Meritor, some Boeing shares and a semiconductor maker, Conexant, which (somehow) became Skyworks Solutions (SWKS). SWKS traded at a few bucks a share a decade ago. Yesterday it closed at $125!

Virtually all those entities pay rapidly growing dividends. The two major surviving Rockwell divisions, ROK and UTX, closed at all-time highs recently on the NYSE.

Not sure why you are telling me this but thanks. Your stock is down 20% in the last year and is still struggling. Last week it was downgraded to underperform/sell. Insiders are selling for a reason.

Its pretty easy to make money in the market when it goes from 17,500 to 25,000. Much harder when the market stays flat or drops.

One huge winner has been ROK spinoff, Skyworks Solutions which was formed from Conexant. I never paid much attention to those shares until they pulled about a 10-bagger in the past few years. What a stock ROK and its children have been!

BTW, Rockwell Collins has solidly beaten ROK this past year.

The Irish banking calamity deserves an entire chapter in textbooks on economic history. Ireland is a tiny country (4 million people) where the entire banking system consisted of just 4 or 5 huge banks. Each bank was run by ego-maniacal chaps who mostly got their positions from family/political connections. The entire country, including government banking regulators, became swept up in a real estate bubble. There were virtually no naysayers. Students need to understand the risks from situations like that.

By contrast, the U.S. banking system and economy were diverse. But it's shameful that so many of our largest banks--but not Wells Fargo-- stumbled the worst. I had a big chunk of inherited Bank of America stock, a company that survives only due to government bailout and Uncle Warren's money and prestige.

Good thing that many of our second tier bank corporations were soundly run.

I'm prejudiced against several sectors: Banking always seems to be boom and bust. I don't love tech. I know retailing well, but I only have Walgreens there.

I've never liked restaurant stocks. But recently I did a survey of publicly owned restaurant stocks and was flabbergasted to see how well most of them have done lately. Worrisome to me that both Dunkin' and Krispy Kreme are soundly beating the market! Only MCD seems to be lagging, which is nutty.

I still hold most of them. Not Costco but all the others. I even have some of my original WMT which I bought in 1978 but I sold a big percentage of it over a decade ago mainly because it represented too large of a portion of my portfolio and its market cap was just too big for sizeable sustained growth. I don't own any bank stocks except for WFC just because they are all crooks and I don't want to associate with them.

I still own FXEN but I am not sure why. I only have 1000 shares of it so I put it in the category that I can't win them all.

The only serious acquisition I have made in the past year or so has been INTC. I think it will go up over the next couple of years and there is unlikely to be much downside. In the meantime I can live with a 4% dividend.

You are correct that it as been easy to do well the past couple of years by doing nothing more than just sitting on my hands.

I was just looking at your old stocks... Costco, Wells Fargo, BAM, your truck company and more. All are doing very well with the exception of FXEN which I gather is a small holding. You still have all those?

Doing well in this stock market has been a no brainer for those who held thru the 2009 collapse (too bad quite a few sold). Heck, even a troubled company like CAT isn't being punished much. Plus smaller caps and NASDAQ have way outperformed blue chips in 2013.

Glorious years for old school (buy quality and hold) investing.

I watch people here turning over their portfolios 10 times a year every year and I wonder why they never learn.

For the most part, iHub doesn't appeal to real investors. Most are gamblers that like penny stocks. I suppose any of your suggestions would have some appeal and maybe ROK should do a 100 to 1 split to get the price in an area that would appeal to them. ROK appeals to people who want to make a good investment with lower risk which doesn't include penny stock gamblers. They apparently like losing money.

The BA board doesn't get the attention that the penny scams get either even though it has piled up outstanding returns. Something about quality investments just doesn't arouse the interest of these people.

What would you suggest to get more interest here? Split ROK 10,000 times? Sponsor a race car? Sprinkle the word "ten bagger" into press releases. Hint that ROK's 22 year old technology chief Trixie had been in porn movies?

Maybe ditch auditor Deloitte & Touche for "Two Guys in Bell City."

Rockwell Automation, Inc. (ROK) reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2013 (ended Sep 30, 2013) adjusted earnings of $1.62 per share, up 14% from $1.42 earned in the prior-year quarter. The results beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.52.

Adjusted earnings exclude the net effect of non-operating pension costs and their related tax effect of 9 cents per share in the reported quarter and 4 cents in the year-ago quarter. Including this, earnings from continuing operations were $1.53 per share compared with the prior-year quarter’s earnings of $1.38.

CAT has had a number of problems lately including a downturn in their mining equipment sales. The problem I was referring to is the following:

(Reuters) - Federal prosecutors in California are investigating a unit of Caterpillar Inc (CAT) for potential violations of environmental law and other alleged improper business practices, the company disclosed in a regulatory filing Friday.

Peoria, Illinois-based Caterpillar said in the filing that its Progress Rail Services Corp subsidiary received a grand jury subpoena on October 24 from the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The U.S. attorney's office in that district told Progress Rail it is a target of a criminal investigation related to the subpoena, the filing said.

The subpoena requested documents and other information from Progress Rail, Caterpillar and Progress Rail subsidiary United Industries Corp in connection with allegations that Progress Rail conducted unnecessary or improper rail car inspections and that it failed to properly dispose of equipment, parts, tools and other items, the filing said.

Airlines were going to low cost jets in the 60s and were briefly hot. I bought and quickly lost on Braniff, my first stock.

Over the years I've mentioned that I met a prescient old man in the 1960s. When he was young he felt that air travel was the wave of the future. He put his money in several upstart airlines. Trouble was, that was 1929!

He was right; I was right. We both lost money. But I was learning how hard it was to outsmart Mr. Market. It was good too that I was a student then, with only a small kitty, and the subsequent years weren't The Depression. Putting money in an airline supplier like Rockwell would have been a better move, perhaps by a factor of 100X

Caterpillar had a string of setbacks lately. Their Chinese unit overstated its inventory and thereby profits. Inventory consisted of hard to count things like... bulldozers! I could have warned them.

I no longer buy airlines and I worry about anything Chinese.

CAT has come up with its own problems today. Glad I don't own any of it. Boeing (BA) is still going crazy. Not sure why it is going up so fast but I am not complaining. I guess Boeing is an example of the old sell picks and shovels instead of hunting for gold theory. Over time it is better to sell planes instead of investing in the airlines.
