That was a great post! Here is the part I like best:
I am brand new to this, what is this chairman of the board business? How does it work?
I think I've caught every mention of coming to the Q&A board to dispute a deletion. If not, let me know. They should all be pointing directly to my profile.

Off topic is a tough one. I've never minded a little innocent off topic chatter. It's only when it distracts the board from it's main purpose that it's irritating, particularly for stock boards or boards like your Q&A.
After reading your message, I realized a good way to handle Off Topic.
Make that a Matt-only thing. In other words, on things that are tricky, instead of having the Moderater/Assistant write a response to me, make it obivious that the TOS button is still there. Just submit a TOS as Off Topic and that gets my attention just as well as a PM.
I'll definitely make that change to the document on draft 3.
thanks :)
now if I could only have just done something productive in the market today... lol
I've added several suggestions to the Handbook and the various removal options.
Sara, I added #1 and #2 from your suggestions. They were great ones. I'll also add #3, once I figure out a good way to write it.

Looking for comments?
1) Invasion of privacy is such an important issue, it should be an major item on both types of boards.
2) It might help to further explain the deletion process, in particular how you are the utlimate decision maker on a deleted post.
3) I think the concept of addressing the issues and not the poster is an important point. Maybe you could expand on that and even give some examples.
It's a good start, just needs a little touching up.
On any board that you are the Moderator/Assistant of, just click the 'Manage' link and you'll see it.
Matt... where can I find the new moderator training doc?
Matt...Yes, and or Matt. This would tell us who pulled it and, and to not restore anything you might have pulled.
TIA.
This sentence is awkward.
Hopefully, this will help make things a little easier to understand how we like to run a clean, intelligent discussion.
It's probably best to break it into two sentences, one for each thought.
Hopefully this will help make things a little easier. We like to run a clean, intelligent discussion.
Or if you didn't have two thoughts in mind,
Hopefully this will help make it a little easier to run a clean, intelligent discussion.
THe reason I have 7 reasons one one and 4 on the other is because of the concepts for each. I, to an extent, allow more flexibility on the premium boards. Less on the free boards.
ONE, you mean on the Manage/Moderator page, you'd like to see the Removed by [assistant/Moderator]?
I don't disagree with you at all. But I do understand why Matt turned it off. If a moderator moderates with a bias I'm sure they could abuse the feature. I guess my point is that if I'm inclined to abuse "off-topic" I'll likely abuse "spam" as well. So what's the difference? I'd like to see it restored for the benefit of those moderators who want to do a good job and will use it appropriately. I think it probably will be soon.
That's a very hard balancing act and one I suggest you send my way, since every case is dynamic.
You can make accusations without backing it up, on both sides of the coin. ...going to da mooon...going to zero...
That's why I get paid the big bucks! <g>
The irony is that moderators on boards where nothing is considered off-topic (Derf's Grotto, my idiotic Spewf board, etc.) have the power to remove "off-topic" posts while their counterparts on INTC, EDIG, etc. do not. One could contend that just the reverse should be the case.
This thread should clear it up. I guess we had it once but it was misused and Matt got tired of it.
I'm confused by the fact that "off-topic" is a valid reason for post removal on Premium boards but not on stock specific boards.
"Where are the nude coeds, exactly?"
Easy to get to, just go to Derf's Grotto and ask dropdeadfred.
(or)
Big Hint: http://www.wickedweasel.com
Matt...I just this board, so I apologize for the dups on other boards. Anyway:
"I would like to see a name next to the Deleted Messages, something like " ~ Removed by _ _ _ _ _ _".
I believe this would be a great aid for us all."
I've bookmarked this, I'll address moderating questions here.
Gonna have to check with Matt on that one, lol.
Where are the nude coeds, exactly?
Uh huh, now you're just trying to confuse me, lol. Seriously though, I'm not trying to make Matt's job any harder than it already is. I just think the Off Topic reason for deletions needs to be refined into a useable option.
Edit:
One possible clause that might help bring this into fruition would be simply that Matt wins all arguements, makes all rules, and ends all life on Ihub at the sight of a KKD, nude coed, or Harley!
What it means is that the wrong use of it doesn't preclude the proper use of it. Off-topic is a valid reason for post removal, however, it's misuse has caused Matt to restrict our access to it.
Matt. If someone has a problem with a deletion, direct them to the Q&A board.
Can you tell me why you have gone from keeping that private and having them go to tools, contact, deletion issues contact instead of to the Q&A board?
Also where do you stand on posters making accuzations about company officers and when asked to back them up, or at least explain the thought process behind such an accuzation, they just blow it off.
I find that the ragingbull sewer rats are the ones I have the most problem with that do that.
It seems to me if we are to discuss both sides of the coin when you present one side you should be able to back it up. I've been on both sides of the coin and I'd never think of bitching about management without saying why I feel they have messed up instead of just accusing.
You know where I'm coming from here as I have contacted you in the past about pumpers on the same board.
Matt, it seems to me that "Threat" would be a good reason to remove a post on all boards. Why is it restricted to premium boards?
Edit: I see that you and chowderhead have already been addressing the question.
Those are two very valid points, but there is still a hole that needs filled in the acceptable reasons for post removal.
The problem with off-topic is that it is highly subjective. It was highly abused as a removal option and I spent countless hours debating with MOderators, so I finally removed it.
Off-topic far too often, depends on moods and where that person stands with the rest of the group.

From the handbook,
please try to limit the amount of discussion of deleted posts. If someone has a problem with a deletion, direct them to the Q&A board.
From my experience on the INTC board this doesn't always work as some posters prefer to go directly to the source, or the moderator who deleted their post! That board had a large number of Off topic posts concerning board management for several days in a row and the vulgarity won!
I'm bringing this up because I believe some posters will always refuse to play by any rules, or see how far they can push the rules. For this reason I would like to request that "Off Topic" be reinstated as a valid reason for post deletion on all boards. Also when Off Topic is choosen as the reason for post removal their should be included a short explanation from the deleting moderator.
I'm going to add this to my next draft of the Mod Handbook. I have a feeling, I'll be making plenty of additions.
I agree with chowderhead...
The reasons for deletion should be as inclusive for Free Boards as they are for Premium Boards.
If not, can you explain why you limit the choices more clearly to us all?
I'll get back around to finishing this thing off, I promise. I've been so busy on and offline the last few weeks.
I often find myself struggling to define the reason I'm deleting a post. It seems like I'm choosing spam or personal attack almost at random because they don't seem to fit very well. As you have restored very few of these I assume you agree that they should have been deleted.
Why can't the free boards have as many reasons available as the premium boards do? At the least I would like to have an off-topic choice. Maybe that's what spam is since it's missing from the premium board choices.
Why would violation of privacy and threat be OK on a free board?
Yeah, I couldn't figure out how I got on this board......and seeing a Lilt Tomlin quote under my siggy.LOL

Sometimes I forget how long I've been working on iHub....
Good grief!
I really like the definition of spam, it's right on target!
I found the following paragraph to be unclear, maybe it's me.
Question: What about setting up my own rules? Can I have my own rules and enforce them?
Answer: We allow some boards to have their own set of rules. This applies almost 100% to stock boards, though. Some trading groups want to cut to the chase and keep some of the babble off their boards…We allow flexibility for certain rules. Check with me.[/v]
Suggestive fix:
Answer: We allow boards on the Premium side to have their own set of rules. Some trading groups want to cut to the chase and keep some of the babble off their boards…We allow flexibility for certain rules. Check with me. Strick rules must be followed on 100% of the stock specific boards.
This clause needs to be added to both sets of rules:
4. Violation of Privacy – posting of any personal identifiable information (email, real name, phone, address, etc)
This should start things off, at least. Some basic stuff in here. I've had some good questions lately, so I need to go through my box and read. It'd be helpful if any of you have any questions you often ask yourself when Moderating, to post it here. I was reading some of Bob's intial posts and he had some good stuff. Will add it.
Nothing major in here, let's add stuff.

Investors Hub Moderator’s Handbook (starting draft, not nearly done)
If you are reading this, you are most likely the Moderator (or an Assisant) of a board here at iHub. Hopefully, this will help make things a little easier to understand how we like to run a clean, productive discussion. If you have spent any time on iHub, you know that Moderators are our secret sauce to making iHub as great as it is. So, enjoy the tips below.
Guide for Stock-Specific and Free Zone Board Moderators
These boards can be posted on by any registered free or paid member of the site.
Note: When managing one of these boards, you have three reasons to choose from when deciding whether or not a post should be removed:
1. Duplicate – an accidental duplicate post by a member
2. Personal Attack – when someone attacks a person, with name calling, or relating to the messenger and not the message.
3. Spam – a message that is being posted promoting other sites, stock-related or not, that has no use in the discussion (for example, if you the board is about Ford Motors, a link promoting amazing returns running a home-based business is worthless to the discussion).
4. Vulgarity – cursing of any kind unacceptable on your board
If it doesn’t fit into either of those categories, it should not be removed.
Question: Somebody is just being annoying! What can I do?
Answer: If someone isn’t breaking any rules or you can’t find a reason that is acceptable to delete it, there really isn’t anything to do. Maybe sending them a private message would help explaining how poorly they are coming across to everybody else. If they are just out of control, let Admin Matt know.
Tip: If you aren’t sure what to do with a specific message, simply report it via the TOS Violation link below the message. Or send Matt a private message.
Question: What if someone is bashing the same topic over and over again? We’re tired of it!
Answer: This is a part of the fine art being an Admin. The best way to handle it is by letting Matt know, it’s his job to deal with the tricky cases, that aren’t true spam, but are just flat repetitive. The same goes for pumping. If someone is just senselessly pumping, let Matt know. Neither go over well on this site.
Tip: If something is a violation of privacy – posting of an e-mail, address, phone, real name, anything of that nature, remove it immediately.
Question: Can I ban someone or remove a post without a reason?
Answer: No. Every post removed must meet the criteria you selected. The only way for a person to be banned from a single board or from the site is through Matt.
Check with me.
Guide for Premium Board Moderators
(These boards can only be posted on by Premium Members or Grandfathered Members.)
Note: When managing one of these boards, you have three reasons to choose from when deciding whether or not a post should be removed:
1. Duplicate -- an accidental duplicate post by a member
2. Vulgarity – cursing of any kind unacceptable on your board
3. Off Topic – a post unrelated to the board
5. Personal Attack– when someone attacks a person, with name calling, or relating to the messenger and not the message.
4. Violation of Privacy – posting of any personal identifiable information (email, real name, phone, address, etc)
5. Threat – someone threatening another member in some fasion
6. Thread Disruption -- someone posting to disrupt the board, stir up trouble.
Question: I hear you allow flexibility on these boards? What kind?
Answer: It really depends on the group. I’m flexible and more relaxed on these boards and allow you to make it your own, which is why I also have more deletion-options so you have more control over your board. We do not currently allow banning of people, though. That is to be handled by me, if it needs to be done. I allow your own thread rules to an extent. If you are pushing the limit, I’ll let you know. Don’t try anything crazy.
For the most part, the rules that apply to the Free Boards apply here. The premium boards are designed to house more exclusive stock clubs that can only be posted on by premium members, or the off topic discussions.
Matt
Take a look at this on the PLUS 100 Board.
There is a web site for polls(not by me).
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=820004
Maybe I can counter this by letting a few more auto change
their stand on the market ?
How ?
More members of the board ???
Let me know

PS: Have only read a few posts here. Will read more on the

Matt,
Some changes I'd like you to consider.
1)Let each board have three assistants, I'd really like four but would settle for three.
2)Let the chair assign another assistant the ability to edit the Ibox and share in all the functions of the chair.
Let me know Fatt boy, lol. Could be a KKD in it for ya. lol
Muell
Yup, thats it. It's none of my business, but did you get that straightened out?
Muell
Nope, haven't heard of any problems. You talking about our good buddy softechie?
Since Zeev has come over are you considering any changes to the COB concept? I've noticed at least one confrontational poster there.
Muell
Hey, don't mess with my alter-ego.
4) You'll see!
Did we ever get to 4)?

Chairman of the Board Concept revision suggestion;
1. Change it to Community Committee
2. Elect a small group of members
3. Forward all TOU complaints to the Committee
4. Committee votes yes/no to forward complaints to Admin for justice.
5. Committee recommends penalties (escalating severity to be established) to Admin.
6. Admin acts or not. If not, presents public post supporting his decision. He can, if he wants, allow a public appeal and designate a voting thread for members to tally their posts
7. Miscreants either agree and accept or go away.
This might help in establishing community psychology
