NEW YORK (AP) -- Research in Motion Ltd., the Waterloo, Ontario-based developer of the BlackBerry wireless service, shares inched up in after-hours electronic trading Friday, after trading was briefly halted for news the company reached a settlement with NTP Inc., the company that sued RIM for patent infringement.

Shares of RIM were up 8 cents in after-hours trading from Friday's closing price of $71.92 on the Nasdaq.

Separately, RIM said it expects to reported flat revenue in the fourth quarter, and that it will add fewer new subscribers than previously expected, due to uncertainty surrounding the NTP lawsuit.

Palm Inc., a competing maker of handheld devices that was expected to benefit from a BlackBerry shutdown, saw shares plummet in the extended trading session. Shares of Palm were down $2.22, or 5.29 percent, to $39.75, from Friday's closing price of $41.97 on the Nasdaq.
