And I think you need to understand a little too.

1 - they are not the primary power source and used to extend the range, by whatever they require or determine.
2 - space can be manipulated based again on the size of the extender they go with.
3 - again depending on size, it does not have to be huge and can be the size of a 20 pound propane tank.

Audi is looking at using a mini rotary engine (wankle) to be the back up motor to run a generator that will charge a cell stack, thus extending range. You don't need huge to make it work!
