checker, OT: They are hold over trems from days gone by...When there was just the NYSE and those stocks not eligible to be traded on that exchange were literally pinned on a bulletin board outside the exchange. The OTC term comes from stocks that still were not able to trade on the NYSE, but had enough "clout" to be sold in department stores. You could walk into a big name New York depatrment stores and by stock certificates "over the counter" right next to the sock counter as part of the everyday wares they sold....
