McIntosh equipment was (and is) great audio gear. I still have a pair of Mac 20's that I break out every now and then just to watch the tubes glow while I listen to the music. Not as good a sound stage as my current amp (also tube, but not as visible) nor as well defined, but there is a warm quality to the Mac's that is like sitting by a fireplace on a cold winter night.
ajtj, your post reminded me that I still have an old Norelco 400 reel to reel tape recorder that needs repair. Because of some special tapes that I value (not music) I'd like to have it repaired - best recall is that it exhibited microphonics which were not solved by installing new tubes. Can you suggest any way to get it repaired? In its day (50's - 60's), I think it was a pretty good quality machine. TIA Maury
