Hmm...I still think semi-custom chips using Intel's IP makes sense here, but who knows what Google's doing. Intel really is great at building server processors, though, so I'm not sure what advantage Google would hope to have.

They'd own their own IP and could iterate their own custom designs at their own pace, for the cost of manufacturing.

Who knows, maybe they want to actually sell Google hw/sw solutions, not just use them internally.
