A knotted plow line is a plow line made of thick leather used to tie the plow to the horses.

The Outlaw Josie Wales told his dying partner "You get those holes a leakin', I'm gonna whomp you with a knotted plow line."

It's an old saying. But I understand if a damned yankee never heard it before.
