SM, there are 2 reasons as to why a person might write a book. One of them is that they are very passionate about a topic or on the other hand, they are good researchers or writers. In the case of Brysons book, here is clearly a writer/researher based on the diverse range of subjects of his publications. I am sure that it is a good book, however I still would recommend "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawkings as an alternate.
