Paired with XMM 7260, I'd agree. With XMM 7160, this thing is dead in the water, IMO.
Nonsense. XMM 7160 supports up to Cat-4 speeds, which is faster than most high-end phones currently in the market. 7260 is Cat-6, and you can't seriously think that Cat-6 will waterfall to being a mid-range requirement by the time Merrifield launches. I think Cat-4 at the lower price ranges is perfectly competitive.
Of course, not even Intel is bullish about winning too much MSS, but I at least expect as many phone designs as we saw with CT+, if not a few more.
This article is a little conservative. The 7160 modem has been shipping for months. Merrifield is ready and March must indicate high volume shipment. The 7260 will at least temporarily take lead from Qualcomm in capablitiy and I believe volume is already ramping at TSMC. 7260 will ship by April.
