Doug, just a few weeks ago, I had people telling me that IBM had ended their commitment with Itanium, citing prevailing Opteron interest as the cause. Now that the wishful thinking has met reality, the sour grapes begin to emerge with, "What the hell took them so long?"
By the way, we're not talking Merced here. IBM has released a system based on the very different platform for Itanium 2. The first of those released to market was in July of last year. That's 9 months and counting.
Saying that IBM waited "1 year, 51 weeks" to introduce a system based on Itanium architecture is like saying that IBM waited "1 year, xx weeks" to give a commitment on a server based AMD product (counting from the Athlon MP launch). And that's pretty much all IBM has given: an announcement, not a product.
