IBM is on board, but (due to Intel pressure?) they are not shouting about it. They haven't named a date, and they haven't decided whether the Opteron system will be called xSeries like the Xeons or aSeries.

They also have prototype Opterons with their kick-bottom Summit chipsets (X-Architecture) which they use to make multiway SMP systems out of dual-capable Xeons. A similar technique could presumably link nodes of 4-8 Opterons together into larger units.

We had all the current and ex Intel employees here shouting about how the DB/2 and Oracle ports weren't sure things right up to the point where they were announced. At that point they switched to complaining that they weren't out of beta testing yet. I'm sure we'll see the same on the IBM servers. Meanwhile IBM is hard at work...

(as for the DELL part, that was a straw man, so I won't respond).
