wbmw: comparing these two images, I see more similarities than differences.

Zoom in a bit. The macrostructures all seem remarkably similar - until you start to look at the "fine print". Contrast these differences to the differences between the various Athlon cores

The "250nm photo" is a bit rough - and it's where you'll find the most differences (since prefetching, SSE, improved BPU were added) - but even here the similarities are much more striking than with the Opteron.

wbmw, forgive me for saying this, but it seems like you've already decided on your conclusion, and aren't really open to an objective consideration of the evidence. I hope I'm wrong.
