Actually, you are wrong about nano. Nanotechnology was pioneered more in asia and europe, in that order, than in the US. It is only in the last few years that the US is really getting the message that nano is going to be important. When I was in grad school during the first gulf war, nano was being poo-poo'ed as a fad here for the most part, while in europe and asia, there were lots of groups seeing what they could do with it. Of course there are the few high profile groups here in the US that have been around since then, but the depth of the early nano work was done elsewhere, at least from my perspective. I think the balance is changing, but realize that the Japanese (govt) are spending more on Nano every year than the entire NSF budget!

In regard to manufacturing, there are numerous non-US manufacturers in the nano area. I'm not into biotech, but what I do know of it tells me that it is not predominantly US either, but surely we have more of an advantage than in nano.
