I went ice fishing for my first time last winter, so I am a rookie.
I used a small jig with a waxworm to start with, then tied on a large stonefly pattern I tied and tipped it with the worm.....Slammo!

Up in Fairbanks the best I found for ice fishing for trout always was a thin slice of raw squid fished near the bottom.
