Years ago IBM was king of the heap. If you wanted a special facility you could not devise something special for your ip and combine it with an IBM machine. You might if you were large be able to talk to IBM and their engineers would work with you to work out how best to satisfy your requirements and design something with you to fit into the system. Great engineering.

Intel came along with its comparatively lousy engineering and people stuck their chips on their own boards and put in boards with other peoples peripherals. The PC revolution was born. Yep I|BM was there at its birth but it didn't really fit into IBM's business. It designed a better peripheral interface and nobody used it and they were left on the sidelines.

Now Intel tells a big customer like Google which has grown up with being able to stick its own boards together, come to us with your problem and our top notch engineers will see if they can't solve your problems on our top notch process.
