The numbers are meaningless, as the only thing you can come to a conclusion about is that on that day that is the shares they have available, that is it. Even that is not confirmed as one would need to call and have the broker do a check to see if they were still available. The point is the number fluctuates for many factors, primarily Margin Account settlement, if one closes out the position, there are less shares available to borrow. The number isn’t an “aggregate”, it is not added and subtracted to give a result.
The actual short sale data shows this clearly, a whole 23,419 shares as of the last report.
Yet another poor conclusion based upon meaningless data.
