I like the way certain vendors like Mediatek are pushing octa-core. Looks like we're back to the Core Wars - seems like we never learned our lessons the first time.
Such designs will not scale in server workloads without the caching and memory hierarchy to satisfy the bandwidth requirements. So, Samsung can design a tetraconta-core processor if they want to, but while the cores themselves may be tiny, the required cache and memory interface would likely dominate a reticule-sized die. An under-designed SOC would impact core scalability to the point where most of those cores would go to waste.
The best thing Intel has going for them in servers is that their customers understand this stuff, and aren't going to be wooed by Core Wars numbers.
