Here is my solution to your problem. Why don't you post an e-mail address periodically for people to e-mail you their share count if they so wish. This way, people that wanted to participate could do so and the board wouldn't get crapped up.
You could then post the results a few times a day, or at your leisure. Nobody has to wade through the spam, and you get to carry out your survey.
