Your friend probably has a point , but if your older than dirt like I am there isn't time to make a fortune collecting dividends. I don't look at it like penny stocks , i look at what the company has to offer and I like our bets.

Sounds like your friend doesn't have a secret weapon like we do (Van). Us oldsters are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to investing. Tim is right, we don't have enough time left to wait for the dividends but if your friend is smart he should be ultra conservative. Invest 90% in good dividend stocks and 10% in speculation like I'm sure most of us here have done.

My retirement is set but would like to have enough to go to my heirs after I have spent some on a little luxury for my wife and myself.

Thus doing a great deal of DD and listening to some of the experts that have been there and done that lets me sleep real nice at nights.

Your friend is right about penny stocks. The penny market shows that only 2 to 4% of stocks under a dollar are absolutely worthless and you will lose lots of money playing in that field if you are not careful. I think the computer age has done a lot for research of companies that you might be looking at to invest in.

Be sure to let your friend know about HTFBS.

He is right. The majority of penny stocks are crap. They are high risk crap shoots. If you do your homework and know what to look for, there can be some life changing opportunities though.
