Severe thunderstorms have been pummeling parts of southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales over the past few days, with more on their way today. A slow-moving low pressure trough fed by a humid onshore flow has been combining with ample amounts of wind shear to produce widespread and intense thunderstorms over the region since last weekend. On Sunday, a heavy line of thunderstorms moved through the Lismore area, dumping 46mm on the town, with 15mm falling in just 10 minutes. In the Logan area south of Brisbane, golf ball size hail and strong winds were reported. On Monday, thunderstorms drenched Coffs Harbour with the town recording 63mm to 9am Tuesday, its heaviest fall since May. This storm was associated with strong winds, generating gusts of 83km/h. Just south of town around Sawtell, there was evidence of stronger winds than this as well as reports of golf ball size hail. On Tuesday, another line of heavy thunderstorms moved through the region, with Grafton picking up 15mm in 10 minutes and Roma gaining 9mm in 10 minutes with wind gusts to 107km/h. Yesterday was a day for ice, with golf ball size hail reported near Gatton and Toowoomba, with hail as large as 3cm not too far from Casino. The trough will remain present over the region today and thunderstorms will again flare up. With the trough edging a little further east, southeast QLD is likely to see the focus of the activity. Those on the Sunshine Coast that have missed out the last few days have their best chance all week of seeing some action today, particularly about the Hinterland. Thunderstorms are again expected to be severe, bringing the risk of flash flooding, large hail and damaging winds. With the trough likely to move little over the coming days, the region remains at risk of further thunderstorms until at least early next week. There is even the chance of a low pressure system forming within the trough, which could bring some heavy rain to the region on Sunday or Monday. More stable conditions should return from about Tuesday or Wednesday as a weak ridge of high pressure pushes into the region. - Weatherzone © Weatherzone 2013
