I'm going on a 12 year old memory of the NASDAQ vs. the NYSE, but my understanding back then was that, for example 100 shares traded on the NYSE with their specialists was counted as 100 shares. The NASDAQ however counted the sale as 100 shares and the purchase as 100 shares. Similar trade yielded twice the reported volume.

Any help out there for this old memory of mine?
