#14956 RE: Jeffrey Scott #14952

My criticism of the public system is a criticism of "the system" and not the teachers, specifically. While some teachers are teaching for the wrong reason, most are dedicated. My criticism is more directed at a mammoth educational system, burdened with regs, bureaucracy and over standardization. I do think too many schools and unions are too quick to blame parents for the shortcomings of their system. The reverse is true as well.

Personally, I do believe if we could do a better job of meeting the individual needs of the young child we would see alot less school failure or underachievement in the later grades. I know of several young children who are struggling in the public system and the system gives little attention to these remedial (and individual) needs. It may resolve or it may set the cycle for continued underachievement and loss of potential. Because young children are very different developmentally and have different learning styles, they say if the specific needs of these children are met, early enough, they go on to thrive and succeed in school. But this requires the parents stay on top of the school, know their child and advocate for their child.

The problem is alot of parents are unfamiliar with the workings of the public system, are over stressed in today's world or don't take the time to get involved with their own children. Personally, my very young child is an individual with very individual needs that are best served in an individual or small group setting. Perhaps it is unreasonable to expect such attention from the public sector, and his education is far to important to leave to chance. So I pay, without reservation because a quality and appropriate education is an absolute need -- and right of every child.

Best to you and your parents!! :)
