Buzz on the BullBoards: Posters Talk of Cramer's Influence on Canadian Stocks
Friday, January 13, 2006
By Sean Mason

By Sean Mason (sean.mason@stockgroup.com)

He's known as the 'Mad Dog' of Wall Street and his bark is worse than his bite. Jim Cramer is possibly the most popular financial commentator in the United States. He's been featured on the television news program 60 Minutes, has his own syndicated radio talk show, and appears nightly on his CNBC segment Mad Money.

On January 10, Jim recommended two TSX-listed stocks on his television show, Crystallex International (TSX: T.KRY) and Zarlink Semiconductor (TSX: T.ZL). Cramer said that although Crystallex is a stock for "crazy people," if Venezuela president Hugo Chavez "doesn't destroy the private mining industry, you'll have a piece of one of the world's most underdeveloped gold projects." Shares of Crystallex have surged 20% since January 9.

Poster rusty33 warns fellow BullBoard users not to buy based only on Cramer, saying "this wouldn't be the first time that his picks saw a spike in volume followed by a return to pre-frenzy levels." (go to post)

buylow13, though, believes a lot of people "will be watching the stock even if they don't buy yet and when we get the good news they will be rushing in pushing the price higher." (go to post)

Zarlink Semiconductor (TSX: T.ZL), Jim's other Canadian pick that day, has seen its TSX-listed share price jump more than 11% since receiving the Cramer seal of approval. Zarlink, a semiconductor company that makes chips for low-power devices such as hearing aids, has sold off its radio frequency assets to Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and "transferred" 70 employees out of the company, this according to Mr. Kramer. Jim "believes that it'll make some mad money if it pulls off its turnaround."

langer claims Cramer isn't the only factor boosting the share price. The poster has evidence of a possible takeover bid for Zarlink coming from Europe. (go to post)

Specboy, meanwhile, talks of the company's financial results, which are expected to be announced on January 24. The poster believes "they will come in..inline...and guide cautiously." (go to post)
