"Google spins off Calico, a new company to focus on health
What will come of the venture is difficult to say: Google released few details about the new company except its name, Calico, and that it will be led by veteran biotech executive Art Levinson, a highly regarded former CEO at Genentech who's also chairman of Apple's (AAPL) board of directors."

I posted an article about Calico, Levinson, Brin and Page from Time last 9/19/2013 about 3 p.m. Surprised you did not remember it.

If Calico would be more of a spinoff from Genentech, I doubt the Roche family would like something like that... as it may force some from Genentech over to Calico under Dr. Arthur Levinson and since I'm sure ex-CEO Dr. Arhtur Levinson likes what Dr. Garnick has been able to accomplish as well --- I could only imagine that partnership. As for the Apple connection, I would only expect many Peregrine Apps and a PR campaign that only Bavi would deserve.... and ok, have to retreat a little bit over what could happen.....

Moreover, Google is tapping a heavyweight biotech pioneer to lead the initiative. Dr. Arthur Levinson is a solid choice for the job, given that he’s the former chief executive at Genentech. He plans to remain the chairman of the board of directors of both Genentech and Apple, a position he assumed after Steve Jobs died in 2011.
