<One point I almost agree with libertarians on is the legalization of drugs. But then if you didn't tax them heavily and redistribute the revenues generated back into education and treatment what would be the point?>
If we would end the drug war there would be no need to tax the drugs. The 100's of billions spent each year on incarcerating people in order to control their minds and lives would be more than sufficient to fund educational programs. This would be unnecessary though, since it has been shown in current and historical models that once the criminal element is removed far less people are prone to use drugs. When all drugs were legal and most people were poorly educated at best we had no rampant addiction and no crime to pay for drugs. The current profitability of the market makes it very tempting to some. Legalization and possibly some form of regulation is the only possible solution to the drug "problem" we currently have; since, the problem lies in the crime and the crime is a result of the laws.
Furthermore, the percentage of addiction prone individuals is fairly constant and these people will find some substance, be it drugs or alcohol or pharmaceuticals. The availability of drugs has not been shown to increase the percentage of the population who are addicted to a substance. Some will always have a problem. Our problem is that we are all paying to control the insatiable appetites of an extreme minority. In this process we are destroying people who may have a legitimate problem and need help, or may have no [i[problem at all. Should we now jail all tobacco smokers because they can't stop and pose a great financial burden on our society due to health care expenses. If we are looking for the more costly act then certainly this would be far more sensible. If we were to assess the health dangers then tobacco would be our priority since far more people are addicted to this, it is much more addictive, and it kills far more than all illicit drugs combined.
